  • Occasion : Everyday
  • Cooking : Braise
  • Servings : 4 servings
  • Cooking Time : Within 30 minutes
  • Difficulty : Anyone

Main Ingredients
  • 1 block of tofu (firm, suitable for pan-frying is recommended)
  • 1 red chili pepper (for color and a hint of spice)
  • 1 stalk of green onion (for a fresh aroma)
  • 1/2 onion (for a touch of sweetness)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Drain the excess water from the tofu by placing it on a wire rack for about 10 minutes, or by gently pressing it with paper towels. This step ensures the tofu holds its shape and fries up nicely.

Step 2

Slice the drained tofu into thick pieces, about 1 cm thick. Slicing them too thinly might cause them to break apart during cooking.

Step 3

Heat a frying pan over medium heat and add enough cooking oil to coat the bottom. Pan-fry the tofu slices until they are golden brown and lightly crispy on both sides. Frying them to a beautiful golden hue will result in a more savory and delicious Tofu Jorim.

Step 4

Once the tofu is golden brown on both sides, transfer it to paper towels to absorb any excess oil. This will make the dish less greasy and more enjoyable.

Step 5

Now, let’s make the flavorful sauce! In a bowl, combine 4 Tbsp soy sauce, 2/3 cup water, 3 Tbsp seasoned soy sauce, 2 Tbsp gochugaru, 1 Tbsp sugar, 1 Tbsp cooking wine, and 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic. Stir well until the sugar is dissolved. (Feel free to adjust the sugar and gochugaru amounts according to your taste.)

Step 6

Remove the stems from the red chili pepper and slice it diagonally into thin rounds. Slice the green onion diagonally into about 1 cm pieces or chop it roughly to add a fresh aroma.

Step 7

Julienne the onion. The softened, braised onions will add a lovely sweetness to the dish.

Step 8

Arrange the drained, pan-fried tofu pieces in a single layer at the bottom of a wide pot or deep skillet.

Step 9

Pour the prepared sauce evenly over the tofu. Then, arrange the julienned onions, sliced red chili peppers, and green onions on top of the tofu.

Step 10

Cover the pot with a lid and simmer over medium-low heat for about 10-15 minutes, or until the onions are tender and the flavors have melded. To prevent sticking and ensure even cooking, gently shake the pan occasionally or spoon the sauce over the tofu. (Keep an eye on it and adjust the heat as needed to prevent burning!)

Step 11

Once the sauce has thickened slightly and coats the ingredients beautifully, your delicious Tofu Jorim is ready! Turn off the heat and drizzle with 1 Tbsp of sesame oil.

Step 12

Finally, sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds for a perfect finish. This Tofu Jorim is a delightful balance of spicy, sweet, and savory flavors, and it holds its shape beautifully without crumbling. It’s truly a ‘rice thief’ that will make your meal disappear in no time. Enjoy making this fantastic dish!
