Main Ingredients
  • Tteokguk tteok (rice cake soup slices) 1 handful (approx. 150-200g)

Spicy & Sweet Sauce
  • Gochujang (Korean chili paste) 1/2 Tbsp
  • Ketchup 1.5 Tbsp
  • Sugar 1-2 Tbsp (adjust sweetness)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the tteokguk tteok. If they are stuck together, gently rinse them under cold water to separate. Be careful not to soak them for too long, as this can make them mushy. Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a frying pan over medium-low heat. Add the rice cakes and fry them slowly until they are golden brown and crispy on the outside. Stir occasionally to ensure even cooking and prevent burning. Once crispy, transfer them to a paper towel to drain excess oil.

Step 2

While the rice cakes are frying, let’s make the delicious sauce! In a small bowl, combine Gochujang (1/2 Tbsp), Ketchup (1.5 Tbsp), and Sugar (1-2 Tbsp). You can adjust the sweetness to your liking. For a richer flavor and a glossy finish, you can also add about 1/2 Tbsp of corn syrup or oligodang. Mix all the sauce ingredients thoroughly with a spoon until you have a smooth sauce.

Step 3

Return the well-fried, crispy tteokguk tteok to the frying pan. Pour the prepared spicy and sweet sauce over the rice cakes. On low heat, quickly toss and coat the rice cakes evenly with the sauce. It’s important to mix them rapidly so the sauce adheres well. Once the sauce coats the tteok, turn off the heat. If desired, sprinkle some sesame seeds on top for extra nutty flavor. Now, enjoy your delicious, chewy, and crispy tteokkochi right away!
