Ingredients
  • 2 bowls cooked rice
  • 1 small can tuna (80g)
  • 1/5 onion

Tuna Seasoning
  • 2 Tbsp mayonnaise
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste

Rice Seasoning
  • Sesame oil to taste
  • Salt to taste
  • Furikake (optional)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Drain the oil from the tuna can thoroughly and place it in a bowl. Finely dice the onion and add it to the bowl with the tuna. Add 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise…

Step 2

…and season with salt and black pepper to your liking. Mix everything well until thoroughly combined.

Step 3

Season 2 bowls of warm cooked rice with a little sesame oil and salt.

Step 4

Tip: If you plan to use furikake to color the rice, you can omit the salt or use only a very small amount, as many furikake seasonings are already salty. I used red and green furikake to give the rice a lovely watermelon color.

Step 5

Mixing in the colored furikake will create a rice with a richer, more vibrant hue than just pink. (I used a Japanese product, but there are many colorful food colorings available online if you prefer.)

Step 6

Take a portion of the prepared rice.

Step 7

Make a small indentation in the center of the rice portion, fill it with a good amount of the tuna mixture, and then cover it with more rice. Gently shape it into a ball with your hands.

Step 8

Lay a piece of plastic wrap flat. Place the shaped rice ball on top and wrap it securely. Press firmly through the wrap to create your desired shape. * For a watermelon shape: Layer red rice, then white rice, then green rice on the plastic wrap, and then wrap everything together at once to form the shape. You’ll need three colors of rice: red (use a little ketchup mixed in, or red food coloring), white (plain rice seasoned with salt and sesame oil), and green (cooked and finely chopped broccoli or green food coloring works too).

Step 9

Use black sesame seeds to create the ‘seeds’ of the watermelon. Your delicious and cute watermelon-shaped tuna rice balls are now complete! Enjoy!
