Ingredients
  • 1 Onion (medium size)
  • 150g Ham (e.g., Spam, luncheon meat)

Seasoning & Others
  • 2 Tbsp Soy Sauce (regular or seasoned)
  • Pinch of Black Pepper
  • 1.5 Tbsp Canola Oil or Cooking Oil
  • Pinch of Toasted Sesame Seeds (for garnish)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Peel and wash the onion thoroughly. Slice it into strips about 0.5cm thick or dice it into bite-sized pieces. Avoid slicing too thinly, as it might become mushy during stir-frying. Maintaining a moderate thickness is key.

Step 2

Cut the ham into bite-sized pieces (about 1cm cubes or strips). Heat 1.5 Tbsp of canola oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Add the ham and stir-fry for 1-2 minutes until lightly browned. This step helps to render some of the fat, making the ham more flavorful and less greasy.

Step 3

Add the sliced onions to the same pan with the ham. Continue to stir-fry over medium heat for about 2-3 minutes, until the onions become translucent and tender. As the onions caramelize, their natural sweetness will intensify, creating a wonderful balance with the savory ham.

Step 4

Once the onions and ham are well-stirred, pour 2 Tbsp of soy sauce (regular or seasoned) along the edges of the pan. This allows the soy sauce to caramelize slightly, adding a deeper layer of flavor. Stir everything together for about 30 seconds to ensure the soy sauce evenly coats the ham and onions.

Step 5

Finally, add a pinch of black pepper and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds for garnish, if desired. Give it a final quick stir for about 30 seconds. Your delicious Stir-Fried Onions and Ham is ready! It’s incredibly easy and tastes amazing served over a bowl of hot rice. Enjoy!
