Main Ingredients
- Pork (for bulgogi or thinly sliced pork belly) 300g
- Crispy bean sprouts 500g
- 1 medium onion
- 1 Cheongyang chili pepper (optional, adjust for spiciness)
- 1/2 green onion
Seasoning Sauce
- 2 Tbsp sugar
- 3 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes, adjust to taste)
- 3 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1.5 Tbsp minced garlic
- 3 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 2 Tbsp sugar
- 3 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes, adjust to taste)
- 3 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1.5 Tbsp minced garlic
- 3 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the vegetables for the dish. Rinse the bean sprouts, trimming any roots, and drain them well. Slice the onion into strips, and thinly slice the Cheongyang chili pepper (if using). Slice the green onion diagonally.
Step 2
Let’s make the delicious sauce for Kongbul! In a bowl, combine 2 Tbsp sugar, 3 Tbsp gochugaru, 3 Tbsp soy sauce, 1.5 Tbsp minced garlic, and 3 Tbsp gochujang. Mix everything thoroughly until well combined to create the sauce.
Step 3
Now it’s time to cook. In a wide pan or pot, spread a generous layer of the rinsed bean sprouts at the bottom. Layering the bean sprouts at the base helps prevent burning and ensures they cook up tender and moist.
Step 4
Arrange the prepared vegetables and pork nicely on top of the bean sprouts. Layer the sliced onion, pork, diagonally sliced green onion, and sliced Cheongyang chili pepper in order. Then, drizzle the prepared sauce evenly over everything.
Step 5
Cover with a lid and simmer over low heat. You don’t need to add any extra water; the moisture from the bean sprouts and onions will create a wonderfully tender dish. Cook for about 5-7 minutes, or until the pork is fully cooked and the vegetables are tender. Give it a stir occasionally to ensure even cooking. Your delicious Kongbul is ready!
