How to Make a Deliciously Spicy and Hearty Tuna Stew
This is a simple and quick tuna stew recipe that you can easily make at home. It’s perfect for a busy day and packed with savory flavor that will delight your taste buds.
Stew Ingredients
- 1 can (150g) tuna, drained
- 1 large potato (approx. 200g)
- 1/2 medium onion (approx. 100g)
- 1 stalk green onion (approx. 50g)
- 1 Korean chili pepper (optional, for heat adjustment)
- 3 Tbsp soy sauce for soup (approx. 45ml)
- 2 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes, approx. 20g)
- 1 Tbsp minced garlic (approx. 15g)
- 1/2 Tbsp sugar (approx. 7g, for balancing flavor)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Prepare all your ingredients for a delicious tuna stew. Drain the tuna by tilting the can, and wash and trim all the vegetables. Having everything ready beforehand makes the cooking process much smoother.
Step 2
Peel the potato and cut it into quarters, then slice each quarter into about 0.5cm thick flat pieces. Cutting the potato too thick can prolong cooking time, so aim for a consistent, moderate thickness.
Step 3
Peel the onion and slice it into thick strips, about 0.5cm wide. These onion strips will add sweetness and a refreshing depth to the broth as they cook.
Step 4
Wash the green onion and slice it diagonally at an angle, about 0.5cm thick. This cut infuses the stew with a fragrant aroma and makes it easier to eat.
Step 5
Remove the stem from the Korean chili pepper and slice it diagonally, similar to the green onion. If you enjoy a spicier kick, leave the seeds in; for a milder flavor, remove the seeds before slicing. (Optional)
Step 6
In a pot, combine the drained tuna and the sliced potatoes. Pour in enough water to just cover the ingredients, approximately 2-3 cups. Adding too much water initially can dilute the flavor, so be mindful of the quantity.
Step 7
Once the water is added, stir in the gochugaru, sugar, soy sauce for soup, and minced garlic. Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat. This initial boil helps the seasonings meld into the ingredients and develop a rich broth. Cover the pot while boiling.
Step 8
After the stew begins to boil, reduce the heat to medium and check if the potatoes are partially cooked. Once the potatoes are about halfway done, add the sliced onion, green onion, and Korean chili pepper. Continue to simmer. At this stage, the vegetables release their sweetness and aroma, enhancing the broth’s complexity.
Step 9
Continue to simmer over medium-low heat until the potatoes are completely tender and easily pierced with a fork. Your delicious tuna stew is ready! Taste and adjust seasoning if needed with a little more soy sauce or salt. Serve hot with a bowl of steamed rice for a satisfying meal!
