Main Ingredients
- 1 bowl of warm cooked rice
- 2 sheets of gimbap seaweed
- 200g prepared snow crab meat (thaw and squeeze out water if using frozen)
- 4 Tbsp mayonnaise
- 1/2 onion
- 1 Korean chili pepper (cheongyang pepper)
- 3 strips of pickled radish for gimbap
- Fresh lettuce
- Fragrant perilla leaves
- A pinch of toasted sesame seeds
- Sugar (to adjust sweetness)
- Salt (to season)
- A little sesame oil
- A pinch of black pepper
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
If you’re using frozen snow crab meat, thaw it completely at room temperature, then gently press with your hands to remove all excess water. This step is crucial to prevent the gimbap filling from becoming soggy and to preserve the delicious flavor.
Step 2
Finely mince the onion. If you prefer less spiciness, you can soak the minced onion in cold water for about 5 minutes, then thoroughly squeeze out the water. Finely chop the pickled radish strips and the Korean chili pepper. Removing the seeds from the chili pepper will reduce its heat.
Step 3
In a bowl, combine the minced onion, minced pickled radish, and minced chili pepper. Add a little sugar, a pinch of salt, and black pepper. Then, add the mayonnaise and the prepared snow crab meat. Gently mix everything together, being careful not to mash the crab meat, to create the filling. The key is to highlight the rich flavor of the snow crab!
Step 4
In a separate bowl, season the warm cooked rice with a little sesame oil and a pinch of salt. Gently mix with a spatula, ensuring the rice grains don’t clump together. This creates a flavorful base for the gimbap.
Step 5
Place a sheet of gimbap seaweed on your rolling mat. Spread a thin layer of the seasoned rice evenly over the seaweed, leaving a small margin at the top edge. Arrange lettuce leaves or perilla leaves on top of the rice to add freshness and aroma. Then, generously place the prepared snow crab meat filling along the bottom edge. Carefully roll the gimbap tightly from the bottom up, ensuring it’s secure.
Step 6
Lightly brush the outside of the rolled gimbap with sesame oil. This not only adds a beautiful sheen but also prevents the seaweed from drying out. Slice the gimbap into bite-sized pieces and arrange them on a serving plate. Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds for a final touch of flavor and texture. Enjoy your delicious snow crab meat gimbap! For an extra kick, you can serve it with soy sauce or a mustard-based dip.
