  • Difficulty : Beginner

Main Ingredients
  • 1 bunch of fresh spinach
  • 1 block of firm tofu (suitable for pan-frying or stewing)
  • Olive oil, for pan-frying

Flavorful Braising Sauce
  • 1 tsp potato starch (for thickening)
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 Tbsp seasoned soy sauce (or dark soy sauce for richer flavor)
  • 1 Tbsp regular soy sauce (or light soy sauce)
  • A pinch of black pepper
  • 1/3 cup water

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Wash the tofu thoroughly under running water. Cut it into bite-sized cubes, approximately 2cm in size. Cubing the tofu generously helps it maintain its shape during cooking.

Step 2

Gently pat the cut tofu pieces dry with paper towels, pressing lightly on both sides. Removing excess moisture prevents oil splattering and helps achieve a crispier texture when pan-frying.

Step 3

Heat a frying pan over medium heat and add a generous amount of olive oil. Once the oil is shimmering, carefully place the dried tofu cubes into the pan. Pan-fry the tofu, turning occasionally, until each side is golden brown and slightly crisp. Be mindful not to burn the tofu.

Step 4

While the tofu is frying, let’s prepare the delicious braising sauce. In a small bowl, combine 1 tsp potato starch, 1 Tbsp sesame oil, 1 Tbsp seasoned soy sauce, 1 Tbsp regular soy sauce, and a pinch of black pepper. Add 1/3 cup of water and whisk everything together until well combined. Your flavorful sauce is ready!

Step 5

Once the tofu is nicely browned, push it to one side of the pan. Add the washed and roughly chopped spinach around the tofu. Pour the prepared braising sauce evenly over the spinach and tofu, allowing it to seep into all the ingredients.

Step 6

Cook until the spinach wilts and the sauce has slightly reduced and coats the ingredients beautifully. Turn off the heat, sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds for garnish, and serve. This braised spinach and tofu is fantastic served over warm rice. Enjoy your delicious creation!
