- A handful of fresh salad greens
- Katsuobushi (bonito flakes) to taste
- 1 red chili pepper
- 1 green onion (scallion)
Dressing Ingredients
- 2 Tbsp soy sauce
- 0.5 Tbsp red pepper flakes (gochugaru)
- 0.3 Tbsp sugar
- 0.5 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds
- 0.7 Tbsp sesame oil
- 2 Tbsp soy sauce
- 0.5 Tbsp red pepper flakes (gochugaru)
- 0.3 Tbsp sugar
- 0.5 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds
- 0.7 Tbsp sesame oil
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, let’s prepare the dressing, the heart of this delicious silken tofu salad. In a small bowl, combine 2 Tbsp soy sauce, 0.5 Tbsp red pepper flakes, 0.3 Tbsp sugar, 0.5 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds, and 0.7 Tbsp sesame oil. Whisk everything together until well combined. Feel free to adjust the soy sauce or sugar to your preference for a perfectly balanced flavor.
Step 2
Now, let’s prepare the garnishes that will enhance the salad’s appeal. Have your katsuobushi ready, perhaps fanned out slightly for a beautiful presentation. Wash and thoroughly dry your salad greens. Finely mince or thinly julienne the red chili pepper, and finely chop the green onion for a fresh, aromatic touch.
Step 3
It’s time to carefully remove the silken tofu from its container. Hold the tofu package upright and gently tap the bottom against a flat surface, like your table, a few times (‘tak-tak’). This helps loosen the tofu from the container, making it easier to slide out later without damage. Be gentle.
Step 4
Carefully open the lid of the tofu package. Then, tilt the package and pour out any excess water. Draining the water is essential to preserve the delicate texture of the silken tofu.
Step 5
Place your serving plate upside down over the tofu container, and then invert the entire assembly so the plate is now on the bottom. With the container still upside down on the plate, use kitchen scissors to make a small snip at one corner of the container’s edge. A small cut is all you need.
Step 6
As soon as you make that small cut with the scissors, you’ll visually notice the silken tofu beginning to separate from the container. This allows air to enter, facilitating a smooth release.
Step 7
Now, gently lift the container. Voilà! The perfectly shaped silken tofu will slide smoothly onto the plate. While you could drizzle the dressing directly over it, we’ll make it even more beautiful.
Step 8
Arrange the prepared salad greens attractively on your serving plate or in a shallow bowl. The fresh greens provide a lovely crisp contrast and a beautiful base.
Step 9
Carefully slide the silken tofu from its original plate onto the bed of salad greens. Aim for an elegant, flowing placement, almost as if it’s gracefully gliding into position.
Step 10
Drizzle 1-2 tablespoons of the prepared dressing over the silken tofu. The dressing will add a wonderful depth of flavor as it coats the smooth tofu.
Step 11
Finally, artfully arrange the katsuobushi (bonito flakes) over the tofu, followed by a sprinkle of the minced red chili and chopped green onions. The vibrant colors and appealing textures complete this stunning presentation. ♡
Step 12
Serving this salad in individual small, elegant bowls elevates it to an impressive appetizer, perfect for guests. It’s a visually captivating starter that shows thoughtful preparation and care.
Step 13
Experience the delightful combination of textures and flavors: the crispness of the chili, the smoky aroma of the katsuobushi, and the melt-in-your-mouth tenderness of the silken tofu. It’s a harmonious blend that tantalizes the palate.
Step 14
Behold the beauty of simplicity! This incredibly easy silken tofu salad is ready in just 5 minutes, no cooking required. Elevate your meal with this delightful dish. Enjoy everyone! 🙂
