Main Ingredients
  • 1 can (100g) tuna, drained
  • 2 bowls of cooked rice
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • Pinch of salt (for seasoning rice)
  • Pinch of sesame seeds (for seasoning rice and garnish)
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise
  • Pinch of black pepper (freshly ground pepper enhances the aroma)
  • A little bit of seaweed (for decorating rice balls)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

This is a crucial first step that greatly influences the flavor of your tuna rice balls: seasoning the rice. This step ensures the rice itself is delicious on its own.

Step 2

In the warm cooked rice, add the salt, sesame oil, and sesame seeds. Mix them thoroughly. For the salt, it’s best to season the rice so it tastes slightly salty; adjust the amount gradually to your preference. The sesame oil and seeds add a wonderful nutty aroma.

Step 3

For an even richer flavor and a more appealing look, you can add dried parsley flakes or black sesame seeds at this stage and mix well with the rice. This adds beautiful color, which kids often love even more! : )

Step 4

It’s important to drain the oil from the canned tuna thoroughly using a sieve. Since mayonnaise will be added, which can make the mixture rich, ensuring the oil is well-removed is key to making clean-tasting and delicious rice balls.

Step 5

To the drained tuna, add 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise and a pinch of freshly ground black pepper. Mix well. The mayonnaise adds creaminess and savoriness to the tuna, while the pepper helps eliminate any fishy or unwanted odors and enhances the overall flavor. If you have tartar sauce at home, you can use that instead of mayonnaise! It adds a delightful tanginess that makes them even more delicious. ㅎㅎ

Step 6

Now, it’s time to shape the rice balls! Gently mix the delicious tuna mayo filling into the rice. Wearing disposable gloves makes the process hygienic and convenient. If you have a rice ball mold, use it. Otherwise, you can shape them by hand into your favorite forms, like rounds or triangles. Today, I decided to make them into nice triangle shapes.

Step 7

You can enjoy these tuna rice balls as they are, but if you lightly coat the outside with sesame seeds, they will look just like the ones from a specialty store – savory and visually appealing.

Step 8

To add a more homemade touch, I crumbled some seasoned seaweed and sprinkled it on top of the rice balls as a garnish. : ) Wrapping or topping the rice balls with seaweed doesn’t significantly alter the taste, so feel free to skip this step or use other garnishes according to your preference.
