Tteokbokki Ingredients
  • 1 handful rice cake soup rice cakes (tteokguk tteok)
  • 1 handful fish cakes (eomuk)
  • 1 handful green onions
  • 1 Tbsp dried anchovy powder (or substitute with broth anchovies)
  • 2 pieces dried kelp (dashima)

Sauce Ingredients
  • 1 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 2 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp fish sauce (aekjeot)
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 3 cups water (600ml)
  • 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Cut the fish cakes into bite-sized pieces. Briefly soak them in warm water to remove any additives. Rinse the rice cake soup rice cakes. Slice the green onions diagonally.

Step 2

In a pot, add 3 cups (600ml) of water. Add the dried anchovy powder (or broth anchovies), dried kelp pieces, and 1/2 Tbsp of minced garlic. If using whole anchovies, remove them once the water boils to prevent bitterness.

Step 3

Stir in 1 Tbsp of gochujang into the broth. Make sure it dissolves completely for an even flavor.

Step 4

Add 1 Tbsp of soy sauce for a savory depth.

Step 5

Add 2 Tbsp of gochugaru for spiciness and a vibrant red color.

Step 6

Add 1 Tbsp of sugar for sweetness and 1 Tbsp of fish sauce for umami. Stir well to combine all the sauce ingredients.

Step 7

Bring the pot to a boil over high heat. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking, and let it boil until the broth is bubbling vigorously.

Step 8

Once the broth is boiling, add the rice cake soup rice cakes first. Stir them to prevent them from sticking together as they cook.

Step 9

When the rice cakes become soft, add the cut fish cakes and green onions. Continue to simmer for a few more minutes. Taste and adjust seasoning with more soy sauce or sugar if desired. Once the tteok and fish cakes have absorbed the flavors, your delicious broth tteokbokki is ready!
