Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Hello everyone! Today, we’re making a beloved Korean side dish, braised tofu (Dubu Jorim), a true ‘rice thief’ that’s enjoyed by all ages. It’s incredibly simple to make, perfect even for beginner cooks. Plus, it’s packed with nutrients, making it an excellent choice for your children’s meals!

Step 2

First, prepare one block of tofu. Gently press the tofu with paper towels to remove excess moisture. This helps prevent splattering when frying and allows the tofu to brown beautifully. Then, cut the tofu into bite-sized pieces, about 1.5 to 2 cm thick.

Step 3

Heat a generous amount of vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium-low heat. Carefully place the cut tofu pieces into the hot oil and pan-fry them until golden brown on both sides. Be gentle to avoid breaking the tofu. Pan-frying until golden creates a slightly crispy exterior while keeping the inside tender and delicious.

Step 4

While the tofu is frying, let’s prepare the savory braising sauce. In a small bowl, combine 2 tsp soy sauce, 1 tsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes), 1/2 tsp sugar, 1 tsp minced garlic, and 1 tsp toasted sesame seeds. Mix well. Finally, add 1/2 cup (about 100ml) of water to the mixture and stir to achieve the desired sauce consistency.

Step 5

Once the tofu is nicely browned, arrange it neatly in the pan. Pour the prepared braising sauce evenly over the tofu. Let it simmer over medium-low heat, allowing the sauce to absorb into the tofu. When the sauce starts to thicken slightly, add the finely chopped scallions and simmer for another minute to infuse a fresh aroma.

Step 6

And there you have it! Your delicious, homemade braised tofu is ready. Serve it hot over a bowl of steamed rice for an incredibly satisfying meal. This is a hearty and flavorful side dish that your whole family will love!
