  • Difficulty : Beginner

Main Ingredients
  • 1/4 head of cabbage

Dipping Sauce
  • 1 Tbsp Doenjang (Korean soybean paste)
  • 1/2 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 1 tsp Oligodang (corn syrup or other liquid sweetener)
  • 1 tsp Sesame oil
  • A pinch of toasted sesame seeds

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the cabbage. A quarter of a head is a good portion for one or two people.

Step 2

Remove the outer leaves of the cabbage and wash it thoroughly under running water. To help remove any residual pesticides, soak the cabbage in cool water with about 2 tablespoons of vinegar for 2-3 minutes, then rinse.

Step 3

After rinsing, place the cabbage in a colander and let it drain briefly. Don’t drain it completely dry; a little residual moisture will help the cabbage steam more effectively in the microwave, resulting in a tender texture.

Step 4

Place the cabbage into a microwave-safe silicone steamer. If you don’t have a silicone steamer, you can use any microwave-safe ceramic dish or container. Cover it with plastic wrap and poke a few small holes with a fork to allow steam to escape.

Step 5

Cover with a lid or the plastic wrap, and microwave for 4 minutes and 30 seconds. Depending on the amount of cabbage and your microwave’s power, you might need to cook it for around 5 minutes. If your steamer has a steam vent, you can leave it closed.

Step 6

Once the time is up, voilà! The cabbage is perfectly steamed and wonderfully tender. The moisture left from washing, along with the cabbage’s own liquid, has created a beautifully steamed result.

Step 7

Meanwhile, let’s make the delicious dipping sauce. In a small bowl, combine 1 tablespoon of doenjang, 1/2 tablespoon of gochujang, 1 teaspoon of oligodang, 1 teaspoon of sesame oil, and a pinch of toasted sesame seeds. Mix well. Considering the great health benefits of cabbage, enjoy it with this flavorful sauce!

Step 8

For an extra touch of elegance and visual appeal, you can garnish the steamed cabbage with thinly sliced chili peppers or carrots. Enjoy your healthy and delicious meal!
