Ingredients
  • 1 cup blueberries (fresh or frozen)
  • 1/2 cup sugar (adjust to taste, typically 50% of blueberry weight)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, measure out your blueberries and sugar. If using fresh blueberries, wash them gently. Frozen blueberries can be used directly without thawing.

Step 2

To ensure the blueberries are clean and free from any residues, place them in a bowl filled with water and a splash of vinegar. Let them soak for about 5 minutes. This vinegar bath helps to remove pesticides and brighten the berries.

Step 3

Drain the blueberries and rinse them thoroughly under running water. Gently pat them dry or let excess water drip off. Transfer the cleaned blueberries into a microwave-safe bowl, preferably one with high sides to prevent spills.

Step 4

Pour the measured sugar over the blueberries in the bowl. You can adjust the amount of sugar based on the sweetness of your blueberries and your personal preference. A common ratio is about 50% sugar to blueberries by weight.

Step 5

Microwave on high power for 10 minutes. For a more consistent jam, it’s helpful to pause the microwave halfway through (after about 5 minutes) and stir the mixture gently with a spoon or spatula. This helps the sugar dissolve evenly and promotes a uniform texture. Once the 10 minutes are up, carefully remove the bowl (it will be hot!) and let the jam cool. It will thicken considerably as it cools, resulting in a delicious, homemade blueberry jam. Doesn’t it look incredibly delicious?
