Golden Turmeric Salt: An Effortless Recipe for Flavor and Health
The Perfect Pair: Turmeric and Salt Made Super Easy!
Hello, everyone! As they say, ‘Food is strength.’ Today, I’m excited to share a super simple recipe for ‘Turmeric Salt’ that boosts both flavor and health. Turmeric, belonging to the ginger family, grows from rhizomes. Its main components include curcumin, essential oils, starch, and minerals, making it versatile for medicinal, culinary, and dyeing purposes. It boasts a deep yellow hue and a distinct bitter taste. The recommended daily intake of turmeric powder is about 5g, or 1 teaspoon. Please note, due to its uterine-contracting properties, pregnant women should avoid consuming turmeric. In this recipe, the salt’s cooling nature is balanced by turmeric, while turmeric’s bitterness is neutralized by the salt, creating a harmonious blend. Using this turmeric salt means you won’t need to add garlic or ginger separately, as it significantly enhances the depth of flavor. A little bit of this salt adds umami without any bitterness, so feel free to use it with confidence! Let’s get started on making this incredibly easy turmeric salt.
Ingredients
- 150g coarse salt
- 5g turmeric powder
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare 150g of coarse salt. It’s best to weigh it using a kitchen scale for accuracy. If you don’t have a scale, you can fill a medium-sized bowl about two-thirds full with coarse salt, which should approximate 150g.
Step 2
Take a microwave-safe shallow dish or bowl and spread the coarse salt evenly across its surface. This ensures the salt heats uniformly.
Step 3
Microwave the salt in short intervals: 30 seconds at a time, for a total of three times (1 minute and 30 seconds). Microwaving for the full 1 minute and 30 seconds all at once can cause the salt to pop and scatter. After each 30-second interval, take the salt out, spread it evenly as it warms and becomes fluffy, and then return it to the microwave. This process gently ‘roasts’ the salt, removing excess moisture and neutralizing bitterness.
Step 4
And there you have it! Simple roasted salt, made effortlessly. Traditionally, salt is roasted in a dry pan, but that risks burning and is quite cumbersome. Using the microwave is a much more convenient alternative. Let the roasted salt cool completely.
Step 5
While you can mix the turmeric powder directly into the cooled roasted salt, I prefer to give the salt a quick pulse in a food processor (grinder) for a finer texture. This makes it easier to incorporate into dishes during cooking.
Step 6
Add the cooled roasted salt to your food processor and grind it until it reaches your desired fineness. Depending on your grinder, the process might vary slightly, so always consult your appliance’s manual for safe operation.
Step 7
The roasted salt has been ground to a lovely fine consistency. If you prefer a salt with a bit more texture, you can adjust the grinding time accordingly. Don’t over-process if you like a bit of crunch!
Step 8
Now, simply add the 5g of turmeric powder to the ground roasted salt and mix them together thoroughly. If you skipped the grinding step and are using the roasted salt as is, you would just mix the turmeric powder directly into it at this stage.
Step 9
Finally, transfer the finished turmeric salt into a clean, airtight jar or container for storage. That’s it! Your special turmeric salt, packed with flavor and health benefits, is ready to be used in all your favorite dishes.
