Elegant Swiss Chard Wraps with Spicy Tuna Mayo Filling
How to Make Beautiful Swiss Chard Wraps with a Spicy Tuna Mayo Sauce
These charming Swiss Chard wraps are a delight to both make and eat! I was surprised by how perfectly they pair with the spicy tuna mayo sauce. It’s a visually appealing and delicious dish that’s surprisingly easy to prepare.
Wrap Ingredients
- 30 large Swiss chard leaves (larger than the palm of your hand)
- 3 bowls of cooked rice
- 0.2 tsp salt (for rice seasoning)
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- 1 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Begin by preparing the Swiss chard leaves, the star of our wraps. Select fresh, large leaves (larger than your palm) and wash them thoroughly under running water to remove any dirt or debris. Ensuring they are clean is key.
Step 2
Bring a pot of water to a rolling boil and add 0.2 tsp of salt. Briefly blanch the washed Swiss chard leaves for just 20 seconds. This quick blanching helps preserve their vibrant green color and a pleasant crispness.
Step 3
Immediately after blanching, plunge the chard leaves into cold water to stop the cooking process and cool them down. To remove excess water without damaging the leaves, gently stack them flat and press down with both palms. Avoid bunching them up, as this can make them harder to unroll later.
Step 4
Now, let’s make the flavorful spicy tuna mayo sauce. Open a small can of spicy tuna and drain off most of the oil. Place the tuna in a bowl and mix in 1 to 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise. Stir well until combined. Adjust the amount of mayonnaise to achieve your desired creaminess and flavor profile.
Step 5
Time to season the rice for the wraps. In a bowl of warm cooked rice, add 0.2 tsp of salt, 1 Tbsp of sesame oil, and 1 Tbsp of toasted sesame seeds. Gently mix everything together with a spatula, ensuring the rice grains aren’t mashed, until well combined. Your rice is now ready for shaping!
Step 6
Let’s assemble the wraps! Take about a ping pong ball-sized portion of the seasoned rice and flatten it slightly. Place a generous spoonful of the spicy tuna mayo filling in the center. Gently shape the rice around the filling, forming an oval or rugby ball shape. You don’t need to pack it too tightly, as the chard leaves will hold everything together nicely.
Step 7
When wrapping the rice with a Swiss chard leaf, place the leaf with the prominent vein side facing outwards. Position the rice filling onto the inner, smoother side of the leaf.
Step 8
Place the prepared rice bundle onto the inner edge of the chard leaf. Gently fold the sides of the leaf over the rice, enclosing it. Trim the long stem of the chard leaf to create a neat finish.

Step 10
Although the explanation might seem long, the actual process is quite simple! If you prefer an even easier method, you can simply form the rice into small balls, place them in the center of the chard leaves, and fold the leaves around them in a more rustic style. Feel free to adapt it to your comfort.
