[Solo Cooking] How to Make Delicious Rice Without a Rice Cooker
Worried about your rice cooker taking up too much space in your small apartment? Don’t be! With this recipe, you can easily make perfectly fluffy and delicious rice in a pot, rivaling or even surpassing the results from a rice cooker. Even when living alone, you shouldn’t compromise on good food! Let me guide you through the simple steps to making perfect pot rice.
Essential Ingredients
- 2 cups rice (approx. 360g)
- 2 cups water (approx. 360ml)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, let’s prepare the rice. Rinse the rice gently two to three times under running water. Avoid vigorous scrubbing to prevent the grains from breaking. After rinsing, drain the rice in a sieve and let it soak for about 30 minutes. Soaking the rice makes it chewier and softer. Ensure the water ratio is 1:1 with the rice. (e.g., for 2 cups of rice, use 2 cups of water).
Step 2
Now, let’s get ready to cook! Combine the soaked rice and the measured water in a pot. Place the pot on an induction cooktop set to 140°C. If using a gas stove, start with medium heat. It’s best to cook the rice gently over medium-low heat initially to ensure even cooking.
Step 3
Once the water starts to gently bubble, reduce the heat to very low or turn off the heat and let it steam for about 10 minutes. It’s crucial not to lift the lid during this phase, allowing the steam to circulate evenly and cook the rice perfectly.
Step 4
You’ll know the rice is nearly done when the water has significantly reduced and small holes appear on the surface of the rice. When the water has slightly more reduced and the rice grains start to glisten, turn off the heat. Be careful not to overcook, as this can lead to burnt rice.
Step 5
Finally, cover the pot with the lid and let it steam for another 5-10 minutes. This resting period allows the rice grains to become plump and the rice to become wonderfully moist and delicious. Resting the rice properly before fluffing is key. Enjoy your perfectly cooked pot rice!
