Delicious Rice Balls: Loved by Kids and Adults Alike

How to Make Nutritious Rice Balls That Even Picky Eaters Will Enjoy

My children are such picky eaters, so I’m always worried about what side dishes to prepare for them daily. However, they absolutely love these rice balls, so I make them occasionally. They tend to eat much more when I serve these! Let’s make some delicious rice balls that suit both my taste and my children’s taste.

Ingredients
  • 3 ladles of warm cooked rice (approx. 2 bowls)
  • 3 Tbsp canned tuna, drained
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil
  • Pinch of salt (to taste)
  • A little sesame seeds
  • 1 strip of pickled radish (like for kimbap)
  • Appropriate amount of seaweed flakes or seasoned seaweed sheets

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the rice. Scoop 3 ladles of warm, freshly cooked rice (approximately 2 bowls) into a bowl. Drain the tuna well and add 3 tablespoons of it (about 3/4 of a 150g can) to the rice.

Step 2

You can use any type of pickled radish you prefer. I used one strip of pickled radish typically used for kimbap. Finely chop the pickled radish. If the pickled radish is already salty, you can omit the salt. If you prefer a slightly saltier taste, add just a tiny pinch of salt.

Step 3

Next, add 1 tablespoon of sesame oil for a rich aroma and a little bit of sesame seeds. Grinding fresh sesame seeds will make it even more fragrant.

Step 4

Now it’s time to add seaweed to enhance the umami flavor of the rice balls. I highly recommend adding a generous amount of seaweed. The seaweed itself is so delicious that you could almost eat it on its own! Of course, if you don’t have much seaweed or prefer less, you can adjust the amount accordingly.

Step 5

Once all the ingredients are in the bowl, gently mix them together with your hands until well combined. Knead the mixture slightly to ensure the ingredients are evenly distributed among the rice grains. Then, shape the mixture into bite-sized balls, about one person’s serving, and your delicious rice balls are ready to be enjoyed!
