Main Ingredients
  • 4 Garaetteok (Korean rice cakes), cut into desired lengths
  • 4 slices Cheddar cheese
  • Condensed milk, to taste (adjust to your preference)
  • 1 Tbsp Parmesan cheese powder
  • Pinch of Parsley flakes (for garnish)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, lightly rinse the garaetteok under running water. If you’re using frozen garaetteok, you can grill them directly without thawing, though it might take a bit longer. For easier handling, you can slice the garaetteok into smaller, bite-sized pieces, similar to tteokbokki cakes, or keep them in longer strips.

Step 2

Preheat your air fryer to 180°C (350°F). Place the prepared garaetteok inside and grill for 10 minutes, or until they are golden brown and slightly puffed. If you don’t have an air fryer, you can pan-fry them in a lightly oiled skillet over medium-low heat until golden, or microwave them for 1-2 minutes until softened.

Step 3

Once the garaetteok are tender and slightly browned, insert wooden skewers into them, making them easy to hold and eat like mini hot dogs. Be careful as the freshly grilled rice cakes will be very hot. This step is also a fun part for kids to help with!

Step 4

Wrap each skewer-ed rice cake with a slice of cheddar cheese. The residual heat from the rice cakes will help the cheese soften and adhere nicely.

Step 5

Arrange the 4 cheese-wrapped rice cakes and microwave them for about 10-20 seconds. This brief microwaving step isn’t to fully melt the cheese, but rather to gently warm everything and help the cheese meld slightly with the rice cake. Microwave times can vary, so keep an eye on them to prevent the rice cakes from becoming too hard.

Step 6

Drizzle condensed milk in a zigzag pattern over the warm, cheese-covered rice cakes. Then, sprinkle generously with Parmesan cheese powder for an extra savory flavor, and finish with a sprinkle of parsley flakes for a beautiful garnish. Your delicious grilled cheese rice cakes are now ready to be enjoyed warm!
