Ingredients
  • 2 slices of bread
  • 2 frankfurter sausages
  • 1 egg
  • 50g mozzarella cheese (or 2 slices of processed cheese)
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • A little butter (or mayonnaise)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, lightly blanch the sausages in boiling water, or place them in a colander and pour boiling water over them. This helps remove impurities and excess salt, resulting in a cleaner, tastier hot dog.

Step 2

Drain the blanched sausages well. Pat them dry thoroughly with paper towels to ensure the breadcrumbs stick properly and don’t become soggy.

Step 3

In a bowl, beat one egg. Melt a little butter in the microwave for about 30 seconds. Place the breadcrumbs in a shallow dish.

Step 4

To make the bread easier to work with, you can leave it at room temperature for a bit or microwave it for about 40 seconds. This makes it more pliable and less likely to tear. Trim off the crusts from the bread slices.

Step 5

Using a rolling pin or a bottle, flatten the bread slices until they are thin. The thinner you roll them, the easier it will be to wrap the sausage and the better they will cook. In this recipe, the bread acts as the ‘flour’ coating.

Step 6

Spread a thin, even layer of melted butter or mayonnaise over the flattened bread slices. Be sure to spread it all the way to the edges; this helps seal the hot dog so it doesn’t unravel.

Step 7

Place your mozzarella or sliced cheese on top of the buttered bread. Leave a small border (about 1cm) along one edge without cheese; this will help the bread stick together when rolled.

Step 8

Lay a sausage on top of the cheese and roll it up tightly, just like making a sushi roll. Press firmly as you roll to ensure a compact shape. Place the seam side down.

Step 9

Dip the rolled bread hot dog into the beaten egg, turning to coat it evenly with a thin layer of egg wash.

Step 10

Using gloves, carefully place the egg-washed hot dog into the breadcrumbs. Gently roll it, pressing the breadcrumbs on to create a thick, even coating. A generous coating of breadcrumbs will make them extra crispy.

Step 11

Line your air fryer basket with parchment paper and place the hot dogs seam-side down, ensuring they don’t touch each other. Lightly spray the tops with cooking oil or olive oil for extra crispiness. Air fry at 180°C (350°F) for 10-12 minutes. Check around the 7-minute mark.

Step 12

Flip the hot dogs and continue to cook for another 3-5 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy to your liking. Cooking times may vary depending on your air fryer model, so keep an eye on the color of the bread.

Step 13

Your cheese bread hot dogs are beautifully golden brown and perfectly cooked. Look at that delicious melted cheese stretching!

Step 14

Insert wooden skewers into the hot dogs for easy handling. Drizzle with ketchup or sprinkle with sugar to taste for a nostalgic and delicious snack!
