Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare one dried squid for making delicious butter-grilled squid. Cut the body and tentacles into bite-sized pieces. It’s recommended to cut them slightly larger than a mouthful, as they will shrink a bit when cooked.

Step 2

Dried squid can sometimes have a distinct chewy texture and a slightly pungent smell. To make it softer and enhance its flavor, you can try soaking it in cold water for about 10-20 minutes. While it’s delicious when cooked directly, soaking will result in an even softer and chewier texture. (This step can be skipped if you’re short on time).

Step 3

If you soaked the squid, drain it thoroughly in a colander. Any remaining water can prevent the butter from melting properly and might cause the squid to cook unevenly, almost like frying. Gently patting it dry with paper towels is also a good method.

Step 4

Now, it’s time to start cooking. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a heated pan over medium-low heat. It’s important to melt the butter slowly without letting it burn. Once you start smelling the rich, nutty aroma of the butter, proceed to the next step.

Step 5

Add the drained squid to the melted butter, spreading it out evenly in the pan. Avoid overcrowding the pan; if the squid pieces are too close together, they won’t cook as evenly.

Step 6

Sauté the squid over medium-low heat until it’s nicely coated in butter and begins to turn golden brown. If the squid pieces are a bit thick, flip them occasionally to ensure they cook through. Once the squid is almost cooked, add 1 teaspoon of sugar and stir quickly. The sugar will melt and create a delightful sweet coating on the squid.

Step 7

Once the butter has evenly coated the squid and the sugar has slightly caramelized, your dish is ready. Turn off the heat to prevent burning and either keep it in the pan or transfer it to a serving plate.

Step 8

Enjoy your warm, freshly made butter-grilled squid! The buttery aroma and chewy texture are at their best when served hot. For a different flavor experience, you can also enjoy it with a side of mayonnaise or soy sauce, according to your preference.
