Main Ingredients
- 1 can Spam (approx. 340g)
- 1/2 medium onion
- 1/2 large green onion (white part mainly)
- 1 block tofu (approx. 300g)
Broth & Seasoning
- 400ml water (approx. 2 cups)
- 3 Tbsp soy sauce
- 2 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 1 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 1 Tbsp minced garlic
- 400ml water (approx. 2 cups)
- 3 Tbsp soy sauce
- 2 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 1 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 1 Tbsp minced garlic
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Open the can of Spam and either cut it into desired bite-sized pieces, or mash it roughly with a fork. Mashing the Spam allows it to absorb the sauce better, resulting in a richer flavor. You can also leave it in larger chunks if you prefer.
Step 2
Slice the onion thinly or dice it. Cut the green onion diagonally. Dice the tofu into approximately 1.5-2cm cubes. Avoid cutting the tofu too small, as it might break apart during cooking.
Step 3
Prepare a heavy-bottomed pot or wok. Layer the sliced onions at the bottom of the pot. Arrange the diced tofu and the prepared Spam on top of the onions. Now, add all the seasoning ingredients (soy sauce, gochujang, gochugaru, minced garlic) and pour in the 400ml of water.
Step 4
Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat. Once it’s bubbling vigorously, reduce the heat to medium and let it simmer for about 5 minutes. As the ingredients cook, the flavors will meld together, creating a delicious jjageuli. For an extra aromatic touch, stir in the sliced green onions during the last minute of cooking.
