- 1 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste – for the spice)
- 1.5 Tbsp ketchup (for the classic sweet and tangy base)
- 1 tsp minced garlic (for aromatic flavor)
- Soy sauce or salt (to taste)
- 1 Tbsp strawberry jam (for sweetness and depth!)
- 1 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste – for the spice)
- 1.5 Tbsp ketchup (for the classic sweet and tangy base)
- 1 tsp minced garlic (for aromatic flavor)
- Soy sauce or salt (to taste)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Prepare your frozen garaetteok (Korean cylinder rice cakes) and sausages. Using ingredients from your freezer makes this recipe even more convenient. Feel free to use whatever you have on hand!
Step 2
Gently steam the frozen garaetteok for about 2-3 minutes over boiling water, just until they become soft and pliable but not mushy. It’s important that the rice cakes are tender for the best texture.
Step 3
In a bowl, combine the strawberry jam, gochujang, ketchup, minced garlic, and soy sauce (or salt). Mix well to create the sauce. If you’re making this for children, using strawberry jam instead of sugar adds a subtle sweetness and wonderful flavor. Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed. You can microwave the sauce for 10-20 seconds to help the ingredients meld together and give it a nice sheen.
Step 4
If you are using tteokbokki rice cakes and Vienna sausages, you can use them as they are without cutting. However, since I used garaetteok and larger sausages, I cut them into bite-sized pieces for easier eating. Prepare them to a size that’s comfortable to eat.
Step 5
Get ready the wooden skewers (or chopsticks) that you will use to thread the rice cakes and sausages onto. You can also use bamboo skewers or sturdy wooden sticks.
Step 6
Alternate threading the prepared rice cakes and sausages onto the wooden skewers. This creates the adorable and easy-to-eat ‘So-tteok So-tteok’ shape. Isn’t the name as cute and appealing as its appearance?
Step 7
Heat a little cooking oil in a frying pan over medium-low heat. Grill the skewered ‘So-tteok So-tteok’ until they are golden brown and slightly crispy on all sides. This method uses less oil than deep-frying, making it a healthier option. Cook slowly, turning them frequently, until the sausages are plump and the rice cakes are nicely browned.
