Main Ingredients

  • 3 sheets of rectangular fish cakes
  • 1/2 medium onion
  • 2 Korean chili peppers (cheongyang)
  • 1/2 stalk of green onion
  • A small piece of carrot

Seasoning Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp cooking oil
  • 0.5 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 1.5 Tbsp red pepper flakes (gochugaru)
  • 2 Tbsp soy sauce (jin ganjang)
  • 1 Tbsp fish sauce or anchovy extract (chamchi aek)
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 100ml water
  • 1 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

For this delicious stir-fry, we’re using rectangular fish cakes – they tend to hold their texture best. We’ll also add two Korean chili peppers for a nice kick. If you like, you can also add thinly sliced potatoes for an extra touch.

Step 1

Step 2

Slice the rectangular fish cakes into bite-sized pieces, perhaps in a zig-zag pattern for visual appeal. Thinly julienne the carrot and onion. Slice the green onions and Korean chili peppers diagonally.

Step 2

Step 3

Heat 2 tablespoons of cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the firmer carrot slices first and stir-fry briefly until they begin to soften. Then, add the sliced onion and sauté until it becomes translucent.

Step 3

Step 4

Once the onions are softened, add the sliced fish cakes to the pan. Stir-fry them with the vegetables. Pour in 100ml of water (or anchovy broth if you have it) – this crucial step helps the fish cakes become tender and absorb the flavors beautifully.

Step 4

Step 5

Now it’s time to season! Add 1.5 tablespoons of red pepper flakes (gochugaru) and 2 tablespoons of soy sauce. Follow with 1 tablespoon of fish sauce or anchovy extract. Stir well to combine everything.

Step 5

Step 6

Add 1 tablespoon of sugar to balance the spiciness with a touch of sweetness. Then, add 0.5 tablespoon of minced garlic for aromatic depth. Continue to stir-fry over medium-low heat until the sauce thickens and coats the ingredients evenly.

Step 6

Step 7

Finally, add the sliced green onions and Korean chili peppers. Stir-fry for another minute until they are slightly tender. Turn off the heat and sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of toasted sesame seeds for a nutty finish. Your spicy stir-fried fish cakes are ready!

Step 7

Step 8

On hot summer days, when you want to avoid spending too much time by the stove, this simple and quick spicy fish cake stir-fry is a perfect dish to make for a satisfying meal. #EomukBokkeum #SpicyFishCake #FishCakeRecipe #HowToMakeEomukBokkeum

Step 9

Who doesn’t love fish cakes? They’re a hit with both kids and adults! If you’re making this for children, consider a milder soy sauce-based version (ganjang eomuk bokkeum) instead of the spicy one. #FishCake #KidsMeal
