Main Ingredients
  • 300g bean sprouts
  • 3 Tbsp Lee Kum Kee Chili Garlic Sauce (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 onion (approx. 65g), thinly sliced into strips
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 Tbsp tuna extract (or soy sauce/fish sauce if unavailable)
  • 1 Tbsp sesame seeds (ground)
  • A pinch of whole sesame seeds (for garnish)

Cooking Bean Sprouts
  • 1 cup water (approx. 250ml)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the onion. Peel half an onion, wash it under running water, and then slice it thinly into strips. Slicing it as thinly as possible will help the seasoning penetrate better and result in a softer texture.

Step 2

Prepare fresh bean sprouts. Rinse the bean sprouts thoroughly under running water several times. It’s important to wash them meticulously to ensure no dirt or debris remains.

Step 3

Now it’s time to cook the bean sprouts. Place the washed bean sprouts in the center of a frying pan, creating a slight space so they aren’t packed too tightly on the bottom. Pour 1 cup (250ml) of water into the center of the pan, immediately cover it with a lid, and steam over high heat for exactly 3 minutes and 30 seconds. Bean sprouts become mushy and lose their crispiness if overcooked, so be sure to stick to the time!

Step 4

Once the bean sprouts are cooked, immediately drain them in a colander to release the steam, then rinse them under cold water to cool them down. This process helps maintain the crispiness of the bean sprouts and removes any unpleasant fishy smell. Make sure to drain them thoroughly to prevent the seasoned dish from becoming watery.

Step 5

Finally, let’s complete this delicious seasoned bean sprouts dish! Place the well-drained bean sprouts in a mixing bowl. Add the thinly sliced onion, 3 tablespoons of Lee Kum Kee Chili Garlic Sauce, 1 tablespoon of sesame oil, 1 tablespoon of tuna extract, and 1 tablespoon of ground sesame seeds. Sprinkle with a pinch of whole sesame seeds for garnish, if desired. Now, gently mix all the ingredients together with your hands until evenly coated. The spicy and sweet rice thief, seasoned bean sprouts, are ready!
