Spicy and Sweet Green Pepper Salad with Doenjang
The Ultimate Side Dish for Any Meal! Make Your Table Abundant with this Delicious Green Pepper Salad
I recently made this green pepper salad using the flavorful sauce from my pickled perilla leaves! This sauce is fantastic as a ssamjang (Korean dipping paste) for grilled meats, and it also makes a wonderful green pepper salad on its own. Its spicy yet sweet flavor is so good, you’ll finish a whole bowl of rice in no time!
Main Ingredients
- 5 green peppers
Spicy & Sweet Doenjang Sauce
- 3 Tbsp doenjang (fermented soybean paste)
- 2 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 1 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 1 Tbsp minced garlic
- 2 Tbsp maesilcheong (plum extract)
- 1 Tbsp sugar
- 1/3 finely chopped onion
- 2 Tbsp banana vinegar or regular vinegar
- 1 Tbsp sesame seeds
- 2 finely chopped Cheongyang peppers (optional, for extra spice)
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- 3 Tbsp doenjang (fermented soybean paste)
- 2 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 1 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 1 Tbsp minced garlic
- 2 Tbsp maesilcheong (plum extract)
- 1 Tbsp sugar
- 1/3 finely chopped onion
- 2 Tbsp banana vinegar or regular vinegar
- 1 Tbsp sesame seeds
- 2 finely chopped Cheongyang peppers (optional, for extra spice)
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, let’s prepare the delicious sauce. Finely chop the onion and Cheongyang peppers. Using banana vinegar will give the sauce a sweeter and milder flavor compared to regular vinegar. In a bowl, combine the doenjang, gochujang, gochugaru, minced garlic, maesilcheong, sugar, chopped onion, banana vinegar (or regular vinegar), sesame seeds, chopped Cheongyang peppers, and sesame oil. Mix everything thoroughly with a spoon until well combined. It’s important to stir gently to ensure there are no clumps.
Step 2
Prepare about 5 fresh green peppers. Making this sauce ahead of time and storing it in the refrigerator is incredibly convenient! It’s perfect for preparing side dishes or enjoying with grilled meats.
Step 3
Wash the green peppers thoroughly and cut them into bite-sized pieces. Cutting them into 2-3cm lengths will help them absorb the seasoning well and make them easier to eat.
Step 4
Now, add about 1 tablespoon of the prepared sauce to the cut green peppers. It’s best to start with a smaller amount and adjust to your taste, rather than adding too much at once.
Step 5
Gently toss the green peppers with the sauce using your hands or a spoon. Be careful not to mash the peppers; the key is to mix them softly so the seasoning coats each piece evenly.
Step 6
And there you have it – a delicious spicy and sweet green pepper salad! Its exquisite flavor makes it a fantastic wrap for grilled meats, and it’s a perfect accompaniment to a hot bowl of rice, truly a rice thief! It’s the best when you don’t have much of an appetite!
