Main Ingredients
  • 2-3 medium potatoes
  • 1 small can of Spam
  • 2 cups (400ml) water

Seasoning
  • 2-3 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili powder)
  • Pinch of sugar (to taste)
  • 1/2 Tbsp fish sauce (optional, adds umami)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare 2-3 medium-sized potatoes. Wash and peel them, then cut them into bite-sized pieces, about 2cm thick. Be careful not to cut them too thin, as they might break down too much while cooking.

Step 2

Place the cut potatoes into a pot and add 2 cups (400ml) of water. This amount should be enough to mostly cover the potatoes.

Step 3

Now, let’s add the seasonings to create the stew’s flavor. Add 2-3 Tbsp of gochujang, 1 Tbsp of soy sauce, 1 Tbsp of minced garlic, 1 Tbsp of gochugaru, and a pinch of sugar. Adjust the sugar amount if you prefer it sweeter. Adding 1/2 Tbsp of fish sauce will provide an extra layer of savory depth (you can omit this if you don’t have it).

Step 4

Place the pot over high heat and bring it to a boil. Once it’s bubbling vigorously, reduce the heat to medium. Continue to simmer for about 10-15 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and cooked through. You can check if they’re done by piercing them with a fork – it should go in easily.

Step 5

Once the potatoes are cooked, prepare the small can of Spam. Open it, drain any excess liquid, and dice it into bite-sized pieces. Add the diced Spam to the pot and let it simmer for another 5 minutes. This allows the salty, savory flavor of the Spam to meld into the stew. Your delicious Spam and Potato Gochujang Stew is now ready!
