Sotteok Sotteok Ingredients
  • Vienna Sausages: 3 per skewer
  • Rice Cakes (Tteok – use chewy or firm varieties): 3 per skewer (choose according to your preference!)
  • Green Onions (Scallions): 2 per skewer (focus on the white parts).

Sweet & Spicy Sauce
  • Minced Garlic: A little (adds flavor)
  • Soy Sauce: 1 Tbsp
  • Ketchup: 2 Tbsp
  • Oligosaccharide (or corn syrup): 2 Tbsp (adjust sweetness)
  • Gochujang (Korean chili paste): 1 Tbsp (adjust spiciness)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Prepare the rice cakes and green onions to match the size of the sausages. (You can use chewy tteok or firmer tteok based on your preference. I personally prefer the softer, chewy tteok!) For one serving, threading 3 sausages, 3 rice cakes, and 3 pieces of green onion alternately onto each skewer will make them look appealing and easy to eat.

Step 2

Add the rice cakes to boiling water. Blanch them for about 1-2 minutes until they become soft and pliable. This prevents them from tearing when grilling or mixing with the sauce.

Step 3

Similarly, lightly blanch the Vienna sausages in boiling water. This helps prevent them from bursting while cooking and ensures a more ‘bouncy’ texture. (Optional step)

Step 4

Thread the prepared sausages, rice cakes, and green onions onto the skewers, alternating them for a visually pleasing presentation. The colorful arrangement will be especially appealing to children.

Step 5

Combine all the sauce ingredients in a bowl to create the delicious Sotteok Sotteok sauce. Using oligosaccharide instead of sugar adds a nice sheen and a smooth sweetness.

Step 6

Heat cooking oil in a pan and grill the sausages, rice cakes, and green onions until nicely browned. For extra flavor, you can melt a little butter and sauté minced garlic in it before adding the skewers, for a richer, more savory taste.

Step 7

Once all the ingredients are lightly grilled, brush the prepared sauce evenly over them. Cook over medium-low heat, turning frequently to prevent burning and allow the sauce to meld with the ingredients.

Step 8

Flip the skewers back and forth to coat them thoroughly with the sweet and savory sauce until it caramelizes slightly. You’ll start to smell that irresistible aroma!

Step 9

Enjoy your delicious Sotteok Sotteok, ready in about 15 minutes! It tastes best served warm. Make happy memories with this ultimate snack that everyone, from kids to adults, will love!
