How to Boil Sweet Corn with a Rice Cooker (No Sugar & Storage Tips)

Easy Rice Cooker Method for Delicious Sweet Corn – Sugar-Free & Storage Included!

Discover a method to boil sweet corn that’s moist and flavorful without added sugar, plus tips on how to store it. This recipe is inspired by the sweet corn my grandmother used to steam with sugar. For my daughters, I’ve opted for a healthier version using just a touch of salt and sugar. Instead of standing over a hot stove, I’ll show you how to conveniently steam corn using your electric rice cooker’s ‘multi-cook’ function.

Ingredients
  • 5 ears of sweet corn
  • 1/2 Tbsp salt
  • 1/2 Tbsp sugar
  • 300cc water

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

For the most moist and delicious corn, it’s best to leave one or two inner husks on when boiling. While many store-bought corns have all the husks removed, it’s highly recommended to leave the inner husks on when cooking at home. This helps retain the corn’s natural moisture, keeping it succulent.

Step 2

If you’ve already removed all the husks, gently rinse the corn under cool running water, being careful not to damage the kernels. Removing the silky tassels will also result in a cleaner eating experience.

Step 3

Cut the corn into manageable lengths that will fit easily into your rice cooker pot. If the ears are too long, cutting them in half will help you utilize the space more efficiently.

Step 4

Pour 300cc of water into the inner pot of your rice cooker. Add 1/2 tablespoon of salt and 1/2 tablespoon of sugar to the water. This amount will enhance the corn’s natural sweetness without making it overly sweet.

Step 5

Stir the water with a spoon until the salt and sugar are completely dissolved. This step ensures that the seasoning is evenly distributed, which is crucial for consistent flavor.

Step 6

Now, carefully place the prepared corn ears into the rice cooker pot with the seasoned water. Ensure that the corn is submerged in the water as much as possible.

Step 7

Select the ‘Multi-Cook’ or ‘Steam’ function on your rice cooker and set the timer for 40 minutes. While the corn steams, you can tidy up the house or relax. (Please refer to your rice cooker’s manual, as the ‘Multi-Cook’ function and cooking times may vary by model.)

Step 8

Once the timer is up, carefully remove the perfectly steamed sweet corn and taste it. You’ll love the chewy texture and subtle sweetness characteristic of glutinous sweet corn. If you prefer a softer texture, taste a cob or two, and if needed, add a little more water and extend the steaming time on the ‘Multi-Cook’ setting. Enjoy your delicious corn! Leftover corn can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for about 2-3 days.
