Main Ingredients
  • 1 block Tofu (approx. 500g)
  • 1 Onion
  • 1 can Tuna (200g)
  • 1 stalk Green Onion
  • 1 Green Chili Pepper
  • 1 Red Chili Pepper

Seasoning Ingredients
  • 300ml Water or Dashi Broth
  • 2 Tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 1 Tbsp Fish Sauce
  • 0.5 Tbsp Sugar
  • 1 Tbsp Minced Garlic
  • 1 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean Chili Flakes)
  • 1 Tbsp Sesame Oil

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, cut the tofu into bite-sized rectangular pieces, about 1.5 cm thick. It’s best to use a larger block of tofu, around 500g.

Step 2

Thickly slice the onion into strips, similar in thickness to the tofu pieces.

Step 3

Spread the thickly sliced onions evenly on the bottom of a pot. This prevents the tofu from sticking and adds a subtle sweetness.

Step 4

Arrange the prepared tofu pieces neatly on top of the onions, making sure they don’t overlap too much.

Step 5

Drain most of the oil from the canned tuna and place it in the center, on top of the tofu. (If you like it spicier, using spicy tuna or chili tuna will also be delicious.)

Step 6

In a small bowl, combine the soy sauce, fish sauce, sugar, minced garlic, gochugaru, and sesame oil. Mix well to create the braising sauce.

Step 7

Pour the prepared sauce evenly over the ingredients in the pot. Add 300ml of water or broth.

Step 8

Place the pot on the stove over medium-high heat and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium and simmer for about 5 minutes, allowing the tofu to absorb the flavors.

Step 9

Slice the green onion diagonally. Also, slice the green and red chili peppers diagonally. (Use any chili peppers you have available. I only had green onions, so I used those!) Add the sliced vegetables to the pot and simmer for another 3 minutes.

Step 10

Turn off the heat once the sauce has thickened to a rich, coating consistency. (If you prefer a drier stew, you can simmer for an additional 3-5 minutes. I like it with a bit more sauce, so I stopped here.)

Step 11

This deliciously braised tuna and tofu stew was a fantastic meal side dish. The flavors from the tuna have infused into the tender tofu, and the sweetness of the onion is subtly present, creating a wonderful harmony. The soft tofu is incredibly delicious! (The amount of soy sauce was adjusted from the original recipe.)
