Fragrant Apple Cinnamon Hotteok (Air Fryer Recipe)

[Air Fryer] Winter’s Favorite Snack! Making Fragrant & Sweet Apple Cinnamon Hotteok

When we think of winter snacks, Hotteok is a classic! Frying them in oil can sometimes make them too greasy. I tried making them in an air fryer and they turned out wonderfully – crispy on the outside, fluffy like a ‘gonggalppang’ (hollow bread), and deliciously mild. Enjoy this special Hotteok with the delightful combination of sweet apples and aromatic cinnamon, easily made in your air fryer.

Basic Ingredients
  • 1 box of Cheal Hotteok Mix
  • 1 fresh apple
  • 1 tablespoon plum extract
  • A little cooking oil (for dough and pan coating)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare all the necessary ingredients. Wash the apple thoroughly, remove the core, and dice it roughly. Take out the yeast and mix powder included in the Hotteok mix.

Step 2

Lightly coat the inside of the bowl where you’ll be mixing the dough with cooking oil. This prevents the dough from sticking and ensures a smooth mixing process.

Step 3

Pour the Hotteok mix powder into the bowl, create a small well in the center, and pour in lukewarm water. Dissolve the included yeast thoroughly; this will make the dough even softer.

Step 4

Mix the yeast-water mixture with the powder, and add a little more cooking oil. Knead the dough until it’s no longer sticky to your hands. Once done, cover the dough with plastic wrap and refrigerate briefly – this makes it chewier.

Step 5

Take the prepared apple, wash it well (you can leave the peel on), remove the core, and dice it into pieces slightly larger than bite-sized. The key is to not chop it too finely so you have some texture when you bite into it.

Step 6

Heat a pan over low heat. Add the diced apple, the seed-filled Hotteok filling (or brown sugar) from the mix, and 1 tablespoon of plum extract. Simmer until the apple becomes translucent and the mixture thickens.

Step 7

Once the apple filling has reduced to a suitable consistency, your delicious apple cinnamon filling is ready. It should be thick, not watery, to be perfect for filling the Hotteok.

Step 8

Take an appropriate amount of the chilled dough and flatten it into a circle on your palm. Be careful not to make it too thin, especially around the edges, to prevent the filling from leaking out.

Step 9

Place a generous spoonful of the prepared apple filling onto the flattened dough. Carefully gather the edges of the dough to enclose the filling completely. Make sure to seal it tightly so the filling doesn’t spill out during cooking.

Step 10

Line the air fryer basket with parchment paper. Arrange the prepared Hotteok in a single layer, ensuring they are not touching each other to allow for even cooking.

Step 11

Cook in the air fryer at 180°C (350°F) for about 15 minutes, without preheating. Flipping them halfway through can help them cook more evenly. (Cooking time may vary depending on your air fryer model, so adjust as needed.)

Step 12

Once cooking is complete, you’ll reveal beautifully golden-brown and appetizing apple cinnamon Hotteok. They look wonderfully crisp, just like freshly baked bread.

Step 13

Carefully remove the warm, perfectly cooked Hotteok from the air fryer and arrange them attractively on a plate. They are best enjoyed immediately while still hot!

Step 14

Finally, for an extra touch of sweetness and visual appeal, you can brush a little of the remaining syrup (or the Hotteok filling mix) on top and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds. Your delicious apple cinnamon Hotteok is now complete!
