Sushi Roll Ingredients
  • 2 cans (200g each) Spam
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1.5 cups cooked rice (approx. 300g)
  • 5 sheets of Nori (seaweed for sushi)
  • A small amount of stir-fried kimchi, finely chopped (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp sesame oil
  • A pinch of sesame seeds

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Prepare two cans of Spam (200g each). These are typically the standard size. Slice them into your desired thickness; slicing them about 1cm thick usually yields about 5 pieces per can. We’ll use both cans for a total of 10 pieces.

Step 2

To remove excess saltiness and oil, soak the sliced Spam in hot water for about 5 minutes. You’ll notice impurities floating to the surface. After soaking, drain the Spam and pat it thoroughly dry with paper towels.

Step 3

Heat a non-stick pan over medium-low heat. Sear the Spam slices on both sides until golden brown and slightly crispy. This process enhances the Spam’s flavor and texture. Be careful not to burn them.

Step 4

Whisk the 4 eggs well and cook them into thin omelets or egg sheets. Aim for a similar thickness to the Spam and rice so the rolls hold their shape nicely. Use a little oil in the pan and cook over low heat for even results.

Step 5

Once the egg sheets are cooked, cut them into pieces that are roughly the same size as your Spam slices. Don’t worry if they aren’t perfectly shaped, as they’ll be inside the roll.

Step 6

Now, let’s add flavor to the rice. If you have leftover stir-fried kimchi, finely chop it with scissors and mix it thoroughly with the warm rice. The sweet and sour taste of kimchi complements the richness of the Spam beautifully.

Step 7

If you don’t have stir-fried kimchi, no problem! You can simply season the rice with sesame oil and sesame seeds, just like you would for regular sushi rolls. This simple seasoning is also delicious.

Step 8

Don’t throw away the empty Spam cans! Wash them thoroughly and dry them. These cleaned cans will serve as perfect molds for shaping your Spam sushi rolls.

Step 9

Cut a piece of plastic wrap that is large enough to line the inside of a Spam can. Place the plastic wrap inside the can, ensuring there’s enough overhang to easily lift the contents out later. Don’t cut it too precisely to the can’s dimensions.

Step 10

Add the seasoned rice into the plastic-lined can. Use a spoon or your hands to press the rice down firmly and evenly. Compacting the rice well is key to achieving a neat, well-formed roll that won’t fall apart.

Step 11

Layer the seared Spam slices and the egg sheet on top of the compacted rice. You can also place the egg sheet first, followed by the Spam – the order doesn’t significantly impact the outcome.

Step 12

Cover everything with another layer of rice. Press down firmly again to ensure all the ingredients are securely held together and the shape is well-defined.

Step 13

Cut the Nori sheets in half lengthwise. This size is usually perfect for wrapping around the Spam can mold.

Step 14

Carefully remove the molded rice and filling from the can. Gently lift it out by pulling on the overhanging plastic wrap. It should slide out easily.

Step 15

Now, wrap the Nori sheet around the rice and filling to complete your Spam sushi roll. You can moisten the edge of the Nori with a little water to help it seal securely.

Step 16

For the neatest cut, let the rolls cool slightly before slicing them, rather than cutting while they are hot. Enjoy your delicious homemade Spam sushi rolls! ^^
