These delightful rolls are not only a hit with adults but also a fantastic way to introduce nutritious and colorful meals to children, especially during the spring when appetites can be fickle. These pretty Ssambap are a unique and enjoyable treat for kids.
Ingredients
- 12 perilla leaves
- 1 bowl of warm cooked rice
- 2 Tbsp ssamjang (Korean soybean paste)
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 1 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, in a bowl of warm cooked rice, combine 2 Tbsp of ssamjang, 1 tsp of sesame oil, and 1 Tbsp of toasted sesame seeds. Mix well to create the filling for your rice rolls. The savory depth of the ssamjang, the nutty aroma of sesame oil, and the delightful crunch of sesame seeds will create a wonderfully flavorful filling.
Step 2
Wash the perilla leaves thoroughly. Then, place them in a steamer basket over boiling water for about 5 minutes until they become tender and slightly wilted. Gently press out excess moisture; don’t wring them out completely, as some moisture helps maintain flavor. Place about 15 grams of the prepared rice mixture onto the rough side of each perilla leaf. Shape the rice into a neat, round ball, enclosing it within the perilla leaf to form a compact roll, perfect for a single bite.
Step 3
As you shape them, the ingredients will naturally form these beautiful, round Ssambap. The freshness of the perilla leaf and the heartiness of the rice create a harmonious and delicious combination.
Step 4
Presentation is key, especially for children! Serve these attractive rice rolls on pretty plates. Pairing them with a light, easily digestible soup like dried pollack and radish soup (Bukuh-Muguk) or clear bean sprout soup is a great idea. You might be surprised at how well children enjoy them!
