Easy Homemade Fish Cake Hot Bar
How to Make Delicious Hot Bar with Fish Cakes at Home
The irresistible hot bar we always buy at rest stops! Traditionally made with fish paste, you can recreate a similar delightful texture and flavor at home using readily available fish cakes. This recipe offers a fun and easy way to make this popular snack.
Ingredients for Hot Bar
- 4 sheets of Korean fish cake (eomuk)
- 4 fresh eggs
- 1/4 carrot
- 1/3 green onion
- 1/4 zucchini
- 2 pinches of salt
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the vegetables that will add flavor and texture to your hot bar. Finely chop the Korean fish cakes. Grate or very finely dice the carrot and zucchini. Mince the green onion as well, using both white and green parts for a fuller flavor. Chopping the vegetables finely will help create a smoother, more uniform batter.
Step 2
In a blender or food processor, combine the chopped fish cakes and all the prepared vegetables. Process until the mixture is well combined and forms a paste-like batter. It’s okay if there are still small pieces, but aim for a smooth consistency. This step creates the base for your delicious hot bar.
Step 3
Add the 4 fresh eggs to the blended fish cake and vegetable mixture. Sprinkle in 2 pinches of salt to season. Gently mix everything together using a chopstick or whisk until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can affect the final texture, keeping it tender and moist.
Step 4
Now it’s time to shape the hot bar. Lightly oil a rectangular egg roll pan (if you have one) or a regular non-stick frying pan and heat it over medium-low heat. Pour the batter into the pan. Once the bottom begins to set, carefully start rolling it from one end, similar to making an egg roll. Ensure the heat is not too high to prevent burning and allow the batter to cook through as you roll.
Step 5
Once the hot bar is rolled to your desired thickness, let it cool slightly. Then, carefully insert a skewer through the center. Slice into bite-sized pieces and arrange on a plate. Drizzle generously with ketchup for that classic sweet and tangy finish. Your homemade hot bar, just like the rest stop favorite, is ready to enjoy! Best served warm.
