Main Ingredients
  • Frozen dumplings, 1 serving (about 10 dumplings)
  • Cooked rice, 1/2 bowl (warm)
  • Tempura flour, 1/3 cup

Seasoning
  • Salt, a tiny pinch (optional)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Bring a pot of water to a rolling boil over high heat. Once boiling, add the frozen dumplings and cook for about 5-7 minutes, or until the dumpling wrappers become translucent and the filling is cooked through.

Step 2

Carefully remove the cooked dumplings from the water and drain them well. While they are still warm, mash the filling thoroughly using a fork or a masher. Ensure there are no large lumps for a smoother texture.

Step 3

Add the warm rice (1/2 bowl) to the mashed dumpling filling and mix well. Use a spatula or your hands to combine the rice and filling until it forms a cohesive mixture. If you wish to add salt, do so very sparingly, tasting as you go, as the dumplings are already seasoned.

Step 4

Pour the tempura flour (1/3 cup) over the mixture and blend everything together using a spatula or your hands until a dough forms and has some elasticity. Kneading it well ensures a satisfyingly crispy texture when fried.

Step 5

Take spoonfuls of the dough and roll them into small balls, slightly larger than a bite-sized portion. Heat enough oil in a deep fryer (or a deep pan) to about 170°C (340°F). Carefully place the rice balls into the hot oil and fry until they are golden brown and crispy.

Step 6

Once the rice balls are perfectly golden and crisp, remove them from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain any excess oil. They are now ready to be enjoyed as a delicious, crispy rice snack.

Step 7

Serve the rice balls warm after they’ve cooled slightly. They make a wonderful snack or a light meal that both children and adults will love. Consider serving with ketchup or your favorite dipping sauce!
