Main Ingredients
- 1.5 cups (approx. 300g) freshly cooked warm rice
- 8 strips bacon
- 1 packet of your favorite furikake (rice seasoning)
- 2 fresh eggs
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
I often use Baekseol’s ‘Bap-i-rang’ series – they have various flavors like vegetable and seafood. I personally prefer the vegetable flavor, but yesterday, the supermarket only had the seafood option, so I grabbed that. They come individually packaged, making them convenient to use, and the rice quality is good.
Step 2
In 1.5 cups of warm rice, add 1 packet of furikake. Gently mix to combine, ensuring the rice grains don’t get mashed. It’s important to mix well so the savory flavor and seasoning of the furikake are evenly distributed throughout the rice.
Step 3
Even just this mixture, with a touch of sesame oil and shaped into onigiri, is something kids absolutely love! It’s a simple yet satisfying basic onigiri that captures children’s taste buds.
Step 4
Take a suitable amount of the well-mixed rice, about bite-sized, and shape it into a round ball. Then, tightly wrap the bacon strips around the rice ball, rolling them around until fully covered.
Step 5
Carefully wrap the bacon so the rice ball holds its shape, creating cute, cylindrical onigiri. Make sure the end of the bacon overlaps neatly to secure it.
Step 6
Now, heat up a frying pan. When placing the bacon-wrapped onigiri onto the pan, start by cooking the end of the bacon that’s tucked underneath. This will help the bacon stick firmly and prevent it from unraveling, keeping the onigiri looking neat.
Step 7
Do not add any oil to the frying pan! The bacon itself will render enough delicious fat. Once the seam is secured, gently roll the onigiri around the pan, cooking all sides until they turn a lovely golden brown.
Step 8
While the bacon onigiri are browning, prepare the eggs in a separate pan. For kids, I recommend cooking them sunny-side up (soft-boiled), but if your children prefer fully cooked eggs, you can cook them until done. Since the furikake and bacon are already seasoned, no additional seasoning is needed for the eggs.
Step 9
Once the bacon-wrapped onigiri are nicely browned, place them on a paper towel to absorb any excess grease. Cutting them in half makes them easier for children to eat in one bite and prevents them from dropping food. They’ll look even more appealing packed in a lunchbox!
