Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Start with 200g (about 7oz) of fresh, sushi-grade tuna. You can find this at reputable seafood markets or well-stocked grocery stores. If tuna isn’t available, fresh salmon makes a delicious alternative.
Step 2
Let’s prepare the irresistible poke sauce! In a small bowl, whisk together 2 Tbsp soy sauce, 1 Tbsp mirin, 1/2 Tbsp rice vinegar, 1/2 tsp lime zest, 1/2 tsp lime juice, 1/2 Tbsp honey, 1/2 tsp wasabi paste, and 1 Tbsp toasted sesame oil. Mix gently until well combined. Adjust the amount of wasabi to your preference for spice.
Step 3
Cut the tuna into bite-sized cubes, about 1.5cm (0.6 inches). Gently toss the tuna cubes in the prepared soy sauce mixture, ensuring they are evenly coated. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 20 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and deepen.
Step 4
When selecting avocados, consider when you plan to eat them. For immediate consumption, choose ones that yield slightly to gentle pressure. For later use, opt for firmer ones that will ripen at room temperature. A deeper green or purplish hue often indicates ripeness.
Step 5
Wash the avocado thoroughly under running water. Carefully slice it in half lengthwise, avoiding the pit. To remove the pit, gently tap the knife blade into it and twist; the pit should release easily.
Step 6
Look at this perfectly ripe avocado! Once pitted, peel the skin away smoothly. Slice the avocado thinly or cut it into bite-sized cubes. Its creamy texture is a delightful contrast to the tuna.
Step 7
Slice the onion as thinly as possible to minimize its sharpness. If you enjoy a bit of heat, thinly slice the chili pepper after removing the seeds. Soak the thinly sliced onion and chili pepper in cold water for about 15 minutes. This step crisps them up while mellowing out their pungent flavor.
Step 8
Start by adding a base of rice to your serving bowl. Use your favorite kind – white, brown, or mixed grains all work wonderfully.
Step 9
Artfully arrange your chosen toppings around the bowl. Add a generous portion of fresh baby greens, followed by the crisp julienned cucumber and carrot. Sprinkle on the thinly sliced scallions, and neatly place the avocado slices. Feel free to add any other favorite vegetables!
Step 10
Carefully spoon the marinated tuna cubes over the rice and vegetables. The vibrant red of the tuna will beautifully contrast with the fresh colors of the other ingredients.
Step 11
Finally, garnish with the mellowed-out sliced onion and chili pepper. A sprinkle of toasted sesame seeds adds a final touch of nutty aroma. Your delicious and healthy Tuna Poke Bowl is now ready to be enjoyed!
