- 1/4 onion
- 1 sheet of seaweed for kimbap (optional)
Rice Seasoning- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp sesame seeds
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
Tuna Mayo Sauce- 2 Tbsp mayonnaise
- 1 tsp vinegar (optional, adds a refreshing tang)
- 1 tsp sugar (adjust to taste)
- 2 pinches of salt (to taste)
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp sesame seeds
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
Tuna Mayo Sauce- 2 Tbsp mayonnaise
- 1 tsp vinegar (optional, adds a refreshing tang)
- 1 tsp sugar (adjust to taste)
- 2 pinches of salt (to taste)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare all the ingredients for your rice balls. Using warm rice will help the seasonings mix better and result in a tastier rice ball.
Step 2
Finely mince the onion. Soak the minced onion in cold water for about 5 minutes to remove its pungent flavor. This step keeps the onion crisp while mellowing out its sharpness.
Step 3
Drain the oil thoroughly from the canned tuna. In a bowl, combine the drained tuna, mayonnaise, vinegar, sugar, salt, and the squeezed minced onion. Mix everything well until evenly combined. Your delicious tuna mayo filling is ready!
Step 4
To the warm rice, add the salt, sesame seeds, and sesame oil. Gently mix with a spatula or spoon until the seasonings are evenly distributed throughout the rice. Seasoning the rice while it’s warm helps the flavors penetrate better.
Step 5
Now it’s time to shape the rice balls! Lightly moisten your hands with water or a little sesame oil. Take a portion of the seasoned rice and form it into your desired shape, such as a ball. Place a generous spoonful of the tuna mayo filling on top, then cover it with another portion of rice, gently pressing to enclose the filling. Using a rice ball mold can make this process even easier and create perfectly shaped balls.
Step 6
Finally, you can decorate your rice balls! Cut the kimbap seaweed sheet into strips and wrap them around the rice balls, or cut them into fun shapes. The seaweed adds a wonderful visual appeal and a pleasant oceanic flavor. Feel free to add sesame seeds or tobiko (flying fish roe) for extra texture and taste! Enjoy your homemade tuna mayo rice balls!
