Tteokbokki Base Ingredients

  • 1 package Tteokbokki rice cakes (approx. 300-400g)
  • 1 medium onion
  • 1 bunch green onions
  • 6 sheets Korean fish cakes (eomuk)
  • 500ml water (about 2.5 cups)
  • 4 hard-boiled eggs (for garnish)

Spicy & Sweet Tteokbokki Sauce

  • 3 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 2 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes, adjust to spice preference)
  • 1 Tbsp Soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp Minced garlic
  • 2 Tbsp Maple syrup (for sweetness, can substitute with sugar or corn syrup)
  • 1 Tbsp Corn syrup (for gloss and extra sweetness)
  • 1 Tbsp Ketchup (for a tangy sweetness)
  • 1 Tbsp Oyster sauce (for umami depth)
  • A pinch of Black pepper

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Rinse the tteokbokki rice cakes under cold water to prevent them from sticking together. Briefly rinse the fish cakes under running water to remove any excess oil.

Step 1

Step 2

Slice the onion thinly. Chop the green onions. Cut the fish cakes into bite-sized pieces, such as triangles or rectangles. Peel the hard-boiled eggs.

Step 2

Step 3

In a large pot or pan, combine the rice cakes, fish cakes, sliced onions, and all the sauce ingredients (gochujang, gochugaru, soy sauce, minced garlic, maple syrup, corn syrup, ketchup, oyster sauce, and black pepper). Mix everything well to ensure the rice cakes and fish cakes are evenly coated with the sauce.

Step 3

Step 4

Pour in the 500ml of water and bring to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium and let it simmer for about 5-7 minutes, or until the rice cakes are tender and the sauce has thickened. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 4

Step 5

When the sauce has reduced to your desired consistency and the rice cakes are soft, it’s time to taste and adjust the seasoning.

Step 5

Step 6

Taste a spoonful of the tteokbokki. If it’s not salty enough, add a little more soy sauce. If you prefer it sweeter, add more maple syrup. For extra heat, you can add more gochugaru.

Step 6

Step 7

For an extra boost of savory flavor, stir in 1 tablespoon of oyster sauce right at the end. This adds a wonderful depth of umami. Turn off the heat.

Step 7

Step 8

Transfer the delicious tteokbokki to a serving plate. Garnish with the peeled hard-boiled eggs and chopped green onions for a beautiful presentation.

Step 8

Step 9

Enjoy your homemade, hot, and flavorful Tteokbokki! It’s always a special treat when made at home. Enjoy your meal!
