I remember making Dalgona coffee with 10 mini Kanu packets once and staying up all night! Because of that intense experience, I thought I wouldn’t crave Dalgona coffee for a while. However, I couldn’t forget that uniquely whipped, delicious taste and ended up making it again. This time, I reduced the amount significantly to make just a single serving. Although the coffee quantity was small, making it a bit tricky and cumbersome, I quickly whipped up a cup and enjoyed a peaceful tea break all by myself. The presentation might not be the fanciest, but the delicious Dalgona coffee flavor is still there!

Ingredients

  • 1 packet mini Kanu coffee (approx. 1 tsp)
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp boiling water
  • 80ml milk

First, confirm that one packet of mini Kanu coffee is roughly equivalent to 1 teaspoon. (You can substitute with 1 teaspoon of regular instant coffee.)

In a deep cup suitable for whipping, add 1 teaspoon of instant coffee. Then, add 1 teaspoon of sugar, which is the same amount as the coffee.

Next, add 1 teaspoon of piping hot boiling water. The key golden ratio here is Coffee: Sugar: Hot Water = 1:1:1. Make sure to adhere to this ratio!

Traditional Dalgona coffee requires whisking by hand for about 4,000 times using a hand whisk! If you’re spending a lot of time at home and looking for a fun activity, you could try whisking it yourself… though, honestly, it can be quite tiring for your wrist. (laughs) To be kind to your body, it’s best not to overexert yourself. Therefore, I used a mini milk frother, which is a bit less powerful, to whip the mixture. Feel free to choose the tool that best suits your convenience!

To prevent the cup from easily spinning while you whisk, tilt the cup slightly and place it on a stable, thick coaster or pot holder. Then, operate the frother. This method ensures a more stable whipping process.

The mini milk frother I used is a bit weak, so it would stop midway, and sometimes the frother head would detach, making the process a bit clumsy. However, I persevered with patience!

Just as every beginning has an end, by continuously whisking, I finally achieved a rich, meringue-like foam. It felt surprisingly thick and stable!

Now, carefully pour 80ml of cold milk into a small, attractive glass. Then, using a silicone spatula, gently scrape all the whipped Dalgona coffee topping you’ve so diligently prepared and place it on top of the milk. Voila! Your single serving of Dalgona coffee is complete. While the appearance might be a bit rustic, the taste of homemade Dalgona coffee is truly exceptional.
