Tortilla Hotteok
The Ultimate Sweet & Savory Treat: Super Simple Hotteok with Tortillas (No Dough Required!)
I often make hotteok, and I had leftover hotteok filling but didn’t want to make more dough. Then, I remembered the stack of tortillas in my freezer and decided to make them like quesadillas! It turned out to be much simpler than traditional hotteok and tasted even better. Enjoy the perfect blend of crispy tortilla, sweet filling, and gooey cheese.
Hotteok Filling Ingredients- 3/4 cup chopped nuts (walnuts, peanuts, etc.)
- 1/2 cup brown sugar or dark brown sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon powder (adjust to taste)
Other Ingredients- 1 (6-inch) tortilla
- 1-1.5 Tbsp shredded cheese (any kind, e.g., mozzarella, cheddar)
- 1 (6-inch) tortilla
- 1-1.5 Tbsp shredded cheese (any kind, e.g., mozzarella, cheddar)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
For the hotteok filling, it’s best to lightly toast the chopped nuts in a pan to enhance their nutty flavor, or use pre-roasted nuts. The general ratio for the filling is about 1 part sugar to 1.5 parts nuts. You can adjust the amount of cinnamon powder to your preference; feel free to add a bit more if you like a stronger cinnamon flavor.
Step 2
In a bowl, combine all the prepared filling ingredients. Use a spoon to mix them thoroughly, ensuring the sugar is evenly coated onto the nuts. This even coating is key for a delicious filling.
Step 3
Heat a non-stick pan over medium-low heat. Place one tortilla in the pan and cook for about a minute until lightly golden. Flip the tortilla. Spread 1-2 tablespoons of the hotteok filling thinly over one half of the cooked side. Aim for a thin, even layer to ensure it cooks through properly.
Step 4
Sprinkle 1 to 1.5 tablespoons of shredded cheese evenly over the hotteok filling. The melting cheese will bind the filling together and add a wonderful savory note.
Step 5
Carefully fold the other half of the tortilla over the filling and cheese to create a half-moon shape. Gently press down with a spatula and cook for a few minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy. The cheese should be melted and the tortilla delightfully crisp.
Step 6
Once beautifully golden and crispy, remove from the pan. Cut the tortilla hotteok in half for easier handling and enjoy immediately while warm. The contrast between the crispy tortilla and the sweet, gooey filling is truly delightful!
