Essential Ingredients

  • Onions (as many as you have)
  • 1 Kitchen knife
  • 1 Stable cutting board

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, take your knife and cut off the stem end of the onion. Don’t cut all the way through; make a shallow cut just deep enough so that the outer layers of the skin start to become loose and wiggly.

Step 1

Step 2

As you can see in the image, the goal is to create a cut that slightly loosens the skin around the stem.

Step 2

Step 3

Next, do the same for the root end of the onion. Make a similar shallow cut, just enough to loosen the skin around the root, without cutting through to the onion’s flesh.

Step 3

Step 4

Again, the root side should have a cut that makes the skin slightly liftable, mirroring the stem end. This is the key to easy peeling.

Step 4

Step 5

Now, gently grab the loosened skin at either the stem or root end and pull. You’ll be surprised at how easily the skin starts to come off!

Step 5

Step 6

Once a section of the skin is off, use it as a starting point to pull off the remaining skin. You can often peel the entire onion in one or two large pieces. It’s incredibly quick!

Step 6

Step 7

If there’s a greenish layer of skin you’d prefer to remove, you can certainly do so. However, leaving it on is also fine. Just be aware that it can sometimes make the onion slippery while cooking, posing a slight safety risk, and it might have a tougher texture.

Step 7

Step 8

Sometimes, an onion might look perfectly fine on the outside but be spoiled or mushy inside. In such cases, it’s helpful to trim away a bit more from the top or root ends to check the internal condition. Always discard any spoiled onions!

Step 8

Step 9

Occasionally, you might encounter onions where the skin is extremely dry and stuck fast, even after trying this method. Trying to peel these with your fingers can be very difficult and frustrating.

Step 9

Step 10

For these stubborn cases, use the tip of your knife to create a small gap between the dry skin and the onion flesh. Then, gently scrape or slide the knife along the skin to peel it away. It works surprisingly well!

Step 10

Step 11

And that’s it! You’ve successfully peeled your onion. Use this simple trick to save time on your next onion prep and make cooking more enjoyable!
