The Tequila Sunrise, a classic cocktail cherished since the 1930s, gained significant fame partly due to its association with the legendary rock band The Rolling Stones. They were known to enjoy this drink during their iconic 1972 ‘Exile on Main St.’ tour, which was even nicknamed the ‘Tequila Sunrise Tour’. Its breathtaking gradient, reminiscent of a vibrant sunrise, paired with a refreshingly sweet flavor profile, makes it truly captivating. This versatile cocktail can also be adapted by substituting the tequila with other spirits or creating a non-alcoholic version for a different kind of enjoyment. Ingredients- 1.5 oz (approx. 45ml) Tequila
- Approx. 2 cups (approx. 300-400ml) Orange Juice
- 0.5 oz (approx. 15ml) Grenadine Syrup
- 2 scoops of Ice Cubes (adjust to glass size)
- Orange slice or Maraschino cherry for garnish (optional)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Start by selecting a tall, straight glass, such as a highball or Collins glass. Fill the glass generously with about 2 scoops of ice cubes. This chilling step is crucial for maintaining the cocktail’s refreshing temperature and influencing the dilution as you drink.
Step 2
Using a jigger or measuring cup, accurately measure 1.5 oz (approximately 45ml) of tequila. Pour the measured tequila over the ice in the prepared glass. This forms the foundational spirit for your cocktail.
Step 3
Next, pour orange juice into the glass until it’s about 80% full. The orange juice adds a delightful citrusy sweetness that also mellows the sharpness of the tequila. Be sure not to fill it to the brim, as you’ll need space for the next step to create the signature layered effect.
Step 4
Finally, prepare 0.5 oz (approximately 15ml) of grenadine syrup. Carefully pour the grenadine syrup over the back of a teaspoon or bar spoon. Gently drizzle it down the inside edge of the glass, or hold the spoon close to the bottom and slowly pour. This technique, known as ‘floating’, allows the vibrant red syrup to sink through the orange juice, creating a stunning gradient that visually mimics a sunrise. Serve immediately without stirring to preserve the beautiful visual effect.
