Super Simple Doenjang Boiled Pork Belly for Solo Living
This is a Suyuk recipe that I started making myself because eating out became too expensive. If you have the time, try making it yourself! ^^ It’s a satisfying and delicious way to enjoy pork at home.
Main Ingredients- 966g Pork Shoulder (Front Leg)
- 2 Green Onions (Scallions)
- 2 Bay Leaves
- Water (as needed)
Seasoning & Aromatics- 2 Tbsp Doenjang (Soybean Paste)
- 1 Tbsp Minced Garlic
- 2 Tbsp Doenjang (Soybean Paste)
- 1 Tbsp Minced Garlic
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, in a pot, add enough water to generously cover the pork. Then, add 2 whole green onions (scallions) and 2 tablespoons of Doenjang (soybean paste). Whisk the Doenjang well into the water to ensure it dissolves evenly and flavors the pork without clumps.
Step 2
After dissolving the Doenjang, add 2 bay leaves. These will contribute a fragrant aroma and help further neutralize any pork odors, adding a subtle depth of flavor.
Step 3
Now, prepare the 966g of pork shoulder. Add the pork to the pot, ensuring it is fully submerged in the seasoned water. If needed, add more water. Cover the pot and bring it to a boil over high heat.
Step 4
While the pork is boiling, add 1 tablespoon of minced garlic. Garlic is excellent for removing any gamey smells and enhancing the overall savory taste. You can also add the garlic from the very beginning if you prefer.
Step 5
To ensure the pork cooks evenly, use tongs to flip it over occasionally. If the water level reduces significantly during cooking, add a bit more water to keep the pork moist, which will result in a more tender final product.
Step 6
Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for approximately 50 to 60 minutes. To check if it’s done, insert a skewer or fork into the thickest part; if clear juices run out, the pork is perfectly cooked.
Step 7
Once cooked, remove the pork from the pot and slice it into bite-sized pieces. Your delicious homemade Suyuk is ready! For an even more delightful experience, serve it with freshly made kimchi salad (geotjeori), crisp iceberg lettuce, spicy chopped chili peppers, fresh garlic slices, and ssamjang (dipping paste).
