Quick & Easy Home Meal Recipe for Teens: Flying Fish Roe Rice with Kimchi and Carrots

Tempting Flying Fish Roe Rice Bowl

My son, who has a big appetite and loves to eat, mentioned he hadn’t had flying fish roe rice in a while. I quickly ordered some for early morning delivery and whipped up this delicious bowl using stir-fried kimchi and carrots I already had. I usually don’t expect him to eat rice in the mornings as he often opts for fruit or salad, but I was happy to make this on short notice.

  • Ingredient Category : Seafood
  • Occasion : Quick & Easy
  • Cooking : Mixed (Bibim-style)
  • Servings : 1 serving
  • Difficulty : Anyone

Ingredients

  • 50g flying fish roe
  • 1 bowl warm cooked rice
  • 30g stir-fried kimchi
  • A little carrot
  • 1 packet seasoned seaweed (Gim), olive oil
  • 0.5 Tbsp sesame oil
  • A pinch of toasted sesame seeds

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Using scissors, finely chop the kimchi. Adjust the amount of kimchi based on its saltiness and flavor.

Step 1

Step 2

Finely mince the carrot. Heat a little olive oil in a pan and stir-fry the minced carrot until tender. This process enhances the carrot’s natural sweetness and improves nutrient absorption, making it more appealing even to picky eaters.

Step 2

Step 3

Prepare 50g of fresh flying fish roe.

Step 3

Step 4

To remove any fishy odor, soak the flying fish roe in 1 tablespoon of cooking wine (like Cheongju) or Mirin for about 5 minutes. This step helps to bring out its delicate flavor.

Step 4

Step 5

Gently drain the flying fish roe using a fine-mesh sieve. Be careful not to break the individual roe to maintain their texture.

Step 5

Step 6

Mix 0.5 tablespoon of sesame oil into the drained flying fish roe. This adds a wonderful aroma. Once the roe is ready, the dish is almost complete!

Step 6

Step 7

Assemble the bowl by layering the prepared ingredients on top of the warm cooked rice. Place the rice in a bowl and artfully arrange the stir-fried kimchi, sautéed carrots, and flying fish roe.

Step 7

Step 8

The colorful toppings of flying fish roe, kimchi, and carrots piled high on the fluffy white rice look incredibly appetizing.

Step 8

Step 9

Finally, add the stir-fried kimchi for a refreshing taste that balances any richness. The finely chopped kimchi cuts through any gaminess, and the sweet sautéed carrots are a secret weapon for kids. For an extra touch, crumble the seasoned seaweed over the top and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds!
