Tangerine Tanghulu (Candied Tangerines)
Easy Microwave Tangerine Tanghulu Recipe
Tanghulu is incredibly popular right now! This recipe shows you how to make tangerine tanghulu, using whole tangerines for a delightful sweet and sour taste. We’ll be using the microwave for a super simple method, perfect for a quick and delicious treat.
Ingredients
- 2 tangerines
- 80g sugar (about 1/3 cup)
- 40g water (about 3 tablespoons)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare your tangerines by peeling them completely. Gently remove any white pith attached to the fruit, as too much pith can make the tanghulu slightly bitter.
Step 2
Insert a wooden skewer or chopstick firmly into each peeled tangerine. Push it in deep enough so that the tangerine is secure and won’t easily fall off.
Step 3
In a microwave-safe mug or heatproof bowl, combine 80g of sugar and 40g of water. The ideal ratio for the syrup is 2 parts sugar to 1 part water.
Step 4
Place the mug with the sugar mixture into the microwave and heat for 30 seconds. Then, continue microwaving in 20-second intervals. You’re looking for the syrup to boil vigorously and turn a light golden-brown color. I microwaved mine for a total of 7 times, but this can vary depending on your microwave’s power. Keep an eye on it!
Step 5
To check if the syrup is ready, drop a small amount into a bowl of cold water. If it hardens immediately, the syrup is done. My syrup turned out a bit darker than intended; for a milder flavor and color, aim to microwave it slightly less until it’s a lighter shade of golden brown. Overcooking can lead to a bitter taste.
Step 6
Working quickly while the syrup is still hot and liquid, carefully dip and roll each tangerine in the syrup to coat it evenly. Ensure a generous coating for a beautiful finished tanghulu.
Step 7
Place the coated tangerine tanghulu on a tray lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat. Let it cool completely until the sugar shell hardens.
Step 8
Voilà! Your shiny and delicious microwave tangerine tanghulu is ready. Enjoy the delightful contrast of the sweet-tart tangerine and the crunchy sugar coating!
