Main Ingredients- 9 Tteokbokki rice cakes (3 per skewer)
- 3 Skewers (not too long)
Sweet & Savory Tteokkochi Sauce- 1 tsp Soy sauce (adds umami)
- 1 tsp Ketchup (the key to the sweet and tangy flavor)
- 1 tsp Oligodang (for gloss and sweetness)
- 1 tsp Cooking oil (helps prevent ingredients from burning)
- 1 tsp Soy sauce (adds umami)
- 1 tsp Ketchup (the key to the sweet and tangy flavor)
- 1 tsp Oligodang (for gloss and sweetness)
- 1 tsp Cooking oil (helps prevent ingredients from burning)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare all the ingredients needed to make the tteokkochi. Separate the rice cakes and ensure the skewers are clean.
Step 2
Boil the tteokbokki rice cakes in water until they become soft and pliable. If the rice cakes are too hard, they will be difficult to skewer and won’t have a good texture. Boiling them for about 2-3 minutes should be sufficient.
Step 3
Drain the boiled rice cakes using a sieve and immediately rinse them under cold water to cool them down. This prevents the rice cakes from sticking together and ensures they are not too hot for children to handle when skewering. 😊
Step 4
Now for the most exciting part for the kids! Have them carefully thread 3 rice cakes onto each skewer. Using skewers with blunted tips can be safer for little hands.
Step 5
In a small pan or pot, combine all the tteokkochi sauce ingredients: soy sauce, ketchup, oligodang, and cooking oil. Place it over low heat.
Step 6
Once the sauce begins to simmer, reduce the heat to very low. Simmer gently, being careful not to let the sauce reduce too much.
Step 7
Carefully place the skewered rice cakes into the simmering sauce in the pan.
Step 8
Gently toss the skewers to coat the rice cakes evenly with the sauce. Simmer over low heat until the sauce thickens slightly and coats the rice cakes with a glossy sheen. It’s important to stir occasionally to prevent them from burning!
