The Best Side Dish for Kids: How to Make Braised Quail Eggs
As Yedal turns 4, she can now eat more of what adults eat, so I’ve been making side dishes and soups that we can all enjoy together. Jangjorim (braised dish) is a prime example. While beef jangjorim is delicious, this time I made braised quail eggs. This recipe is perfect for little ones, offering a delightful balance of sweet and savory flavors.
Main Ingredients- 28 quail eggs
- 1 handful of mini king oyster mushrooms (about 100g)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, rinse the quail eggs under cold water. Place them in a pot with cold water and begin boiling from the start for about 15 minutes. This method helps make the shells easier to peel later.
Step 2
Once boiled, rinse the quail eggs under running cold water. Lightly crack the shells by gently tapping them; this will make peeling much easier. Carefully peel all the shells off and set the eggs aside.
Step 3
Place the peeled quail eggs into a pot. Add just enough water to cover the eggs. Avoid adding too much water, as it will prolong the braising time.
Step 4
Now, let’s make the delicious braising sauce. Add 2 Tbsp soy sauce, 1/2 Tbsp sugar, and 1 Tbsp cooking wine to the pot. You can adjust the amount of sugar to your preference.
Step 5
Lightly wash the mini king oyster mushrooms and slice them thinly or cut them into 2-3 pieces. Add the prepared mushrooms to the pot along with the quail eggs to braise together. The chewy texture of the mushrooms complements the quail eggs wonderfully.
Step 6
Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to medium-low. It’s crucial to stir frequently to ensure the sauce evenly coats the quail eggs and mushrooms. I accidentally got distracted and didn’t stir enough, which resulted in uneven coloring! Stirring regularly will help achieve a beautiful, uniform color.
Step 7
Once the sauce has reduced and beautifully coated the quail eggs with a rich, appetizing color, they are ready! This dish is not too salty and has a pleasant sweet and savory taste that kids absolutely love. Served over warm rice, it will disappear in no time. Gift your child a healthy home-cooked meal with these delicious braised quail eggs!
