Tteokbokki Ingredients

  • 2 cups rice tteokbokki rice cakes (approx. 300g)
  • 1 sheet fish cake (flat type)
  • 2 rolls fish cake (tube type)

Cooking Instructions

First, prepare the Sikhye liquid. If using store-bought Sikhye, strain out the rice grains and measure out 100ml of the liquid. This natural sweetness is the key to this unique tteokbokki.

In a pot, combine the 100ml of Sikhye liquid with 1 Tbsp gochujang, 1/2 Tbsp gochugaru, 1/2 Tbsp maesilcheong, and 1/3 Tbsp ginger syrup. Stir well to combine the seasonings. Bring to a rolling boil over high heat, then reduce to medium-low heat.

Cut the fish cakes into bite-sized pieces (1 sheet into 4 pieces, 2 rolls into 2-3 pieces each). Briefly blanch the fish cakes in boiling water to remove any excess oil and impurities for a cleaner taste. Rinse the rice cakes under cold water.

Add the blanched fish cakes and the rinsed rice cakes to the simmering sauce. Stir continuously with a spatula or spoon to prevent the rice cakes from sticking to the bottom of the pot. Cook for about 5-7 minutes, or until the rice cakes are soft and chewy and have absorbed the sauce.

Once the rice cakes are tender and the sauce has thickened, add the diagonally sliced green onions (if using) and stir gently. Cook for another minute. The green onions add a fresh aroma that complements the flavors.
