How to Make Delicious Croutons from Leftover Bread
Lately, I’ve found myself baking a lot of bread, especially sourdough, which often leaves me with a surplus of bread in the refrigerator! To tackle this, I decided to make some sourdough croutons. They turned out to be a fantastic accompaniment to wine, making them a perfect wine snack. Let’s make these crunchy and sweet croutons!
Ingredients- 3 slices of bread (sourdough or any firm bread)
- 30 g unsalted butter
- 1-2 Tbsp sugar (adjust to your preference)
- Pinch of salt
- Extra sugar for dusting
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the bread. If you have leftover slices of sourdough or any other firm bread, cut them into bite-sized pieces, approximately 2-3 cm squares or rectangles. Aim for a thickness of about 1.5 to 2 cm. Cutting them uniformly will ensure they bake evenly.
Step 2
Melt the butter and create the flavor base. Place 30g of unsalted butter in a microwave-safe bowl and heat for about 1 minute until completely melted. Once melted, stir in 1 to 2 tablespoons of sugar, depending on your desired sweetness, and mix well until the sugar is dissolved. Add a pinch of salt to enhance the overall flavor.
Step 3
Coat the bread pieces with the delicious butter mixture. Pour the prepared sugar-butter sauce over the bread pieces you cut in the previous step. Gently toss the bread to ensure each piece is evenly coated and has absorbed some of the mixture. Be careful not to break the bread while tossing.
Step 4
Preheat your oven and get ready to bake. Let the butter-coated bread pieces sit for a moment to allow the flavors to meld. Meanwhile, preheat your oven to 170°C (340°F). Preheating the oven properly is key to achieving a crispy texture.
Step 5
Bake until golden brown for the perfect crunch. Place the butter-coated bread pieces on a baking sheet in the preheated oven. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the edges of the croutons turn a beautiful golden brown. Flipping them halfway through can help ensure even browning.
Step 6
Finish with a sweet coating for the final touch. Transfer the warm croutons from the oven to a wire rack to cool slightly. While they are still warm, sprinkle a little extra sugar over them, coating them evenly. The residual heat will help the sugar adhere and create a delightful sweet crust. Your delicious croutons are now ready to enjoy!
